...I can't tell if this action is the clipped spade
dolls head Webley A&WC or the clover leaf PHV-1.

Can you?

Why not call and ask Mr. C?

Jack, it's a PHV-1.

4seventy,

Are you seeing it clearly? Am I missing a cue?

I am not shopping now, budget is maxed with the one old

Brit D/R that I have. I just think this one looks worth a

thorough examination for those in the hunt.

Jack,
While those pictures don't make it easy to tell at first glance, I can see enough to be 99.9% sure it's a PHV-1.

Yes, it's definately worth a look for anyone in the market at present.

The PHV-1 and the A&WC are often described as being almost the same as each other in design and operation.
Not true, they are vastly different in the way that the third bite operates. Totally different systems, even though they look "similar".
There is nothing wrong with the PHV-1 though.

I agree with 4seventy. The first photo clearly shows a PHV-1. You can tell by the slot cut through the dolls head (see my extreme blow-up below).

I also agree that a PHV-1 is a great action in its own right. Here is a good servicable working rifle in one of the very best calibers.

To further illustrate, here's a nice clear photo of a PHV-1 showing the slot I am referring to:

This photo came from this thread on the DR Photo Archive Forum:

Likewise, here's a photo of the breech of a Webley A&WC showing there is no slot through the dolls head:

4Seventy and Curl,

Thanks for clarifying. Your efforts have revealed
what was not so obvious.

Jack,

You are welcome!

We all have a lot to learn about double rifles. That's what makes them so fascinating.
