lapua
I highly recommend you shoot a 500 Nitro double before you buy one.

I hunt with a 450 No2 and a 450/400.
I think you would be much happier with a 450/400.

Hi Lapua,
At the moment I am using a 470NE and must say I can shoot it well, BUT I am seling it for a lighter, faster, less recoil, more versatile 450/400 and would think a Heym in 450NE or 450/400 would be great.
The American Distributor {a NITROEXPRESS member} can have it built with 26" barrels and a nice pancake cheek piece also.

I would agree with NE450No2 and I have a 500 NE!!
You can shoot it rapidly but it does abuse you.And I am a big guy at 250+ pounds.

I would think the 450/400 could be used as well for most everything else except close range Ele.I think my wish list for my next African Double Rifle would be a 450/400 but in reality will most probably a 9.3 which I can justify better for stateside hunting.

If only Merkel would make a 450/400 DR!!

lapua,
Talking recoil, the 500 NE is a big step up from the 375 H&H.
The 450-400 is mild in recoil compared to a 500 NE.

The 450-400 IMO is a better choice for an all round rifle than the 500, plus 450-400's are the flavour of the month right now so you could most likely sell it off without too much trouble if you wanted more gun later on.

That said, the 500 is a wonderfull cartridge and despite my "4seventy" handle, the 500 Nitro 3 inch is my favourite big chambering in a double.

Lapua,

I don't liker ecoil at all myself and I was kindly given two of Ernie Stalman's 40-400s at last year's BGRC Lodi match and found them very nice to shoot. Recoilw as like shooting a shotgun and no problem at all even for me. If you want a light recoiling gun you may find the 450-400's recoil even less than a 375's.

Cheers!

lapua

Even though recoil is subjective and partly dependant on stock fit, weight of gun etc, at 74kgs I think you would really feel the 500 Nitro recoil - it is a step up from the 470 and I ntoice it even though I am 100kgs.

If you are in Melbourne anytime, I'll give you a shot of a couple, all of which have different stocks / weights.

450/400 would be a far better option.
