Correct weight for a modern, scoped 9.3x74R double
      #52846 - 20/03/06 03:16 PM

Gentlemen

I am interested in your opinions on this. Lets consider Merkel, Krieghoff and Chapuis doubles with say a Leupold 1.5 - 5 VX III scope. What would you consider to be too heavy taking into account the rifle would be carried a lot and is a relatively light calibre? What weight would be just right?

Thanks.

GG

8 to 8 1/2 pounds is about right with a scope. The 9,3X74R has a bit of recoil with the 286 gr loadings, and too light may cause troubles with magnum eyebrow.

Like the others have said, 8 to 8 1/2 pounds all up with scope and mounts is fine.
My 400-350, which can do anything a 9.3/74 can do , is close to 8 1/2 with 2 1/2 power Leup in steel rings.
Easy to carry and easy to shoot!

A Chapuis UGEX 9.3 usually weighs around 7.25 lbs. I would guess that a low power scope and claw mounts would get it up to 8.5 or so? I wouldn't want it any lighter.

As 400 Nitro stated my Chapuis weighs 7.25 lbs without scope. I have carried mine with its 1.5-6x42 Swarovoski scope in Montana, Idaho, Texas, Canada, and on 2 trips to Zim.
I do not find the recoil bad at all. The rifle is a joy to carry.
It kills game way beyond what its ballistics would suggest.

Handled afew 9.3sxs' at Reno. 7.25-7.5lb bare seemed about right for me(add 1lb for 2.5-8x leu& mounts)
I also handled a sidelock H&H .300h&h that weighed a tonne without scope, I felt very little pleasure in that rig. Put it down afew seconds after picking it up, did not appeal at all.Dont know why they made it so heavy.
Hagns' 7x75r SxS falling block weighs 6.5lb bare.

Had a Chapuis UGEX in 9.3x74 with Leupold 1.5x5 Vari XIII in Ruger rings (removed factory blocks in rib and made custom Ruger blocks) Decellerator pad. For me it was viscious to shoot. Shot beautifully but would give me a headache after 2 rounds. I think the minimum weight for me would be 9+ lbs. The Chapuis is the neatest, trimest double I've had but a pain to shoot. I've had 2 other Valmets in 9.3x74 and put Mercury reducers and full thickness Decellerators on both. They were shootable with scopes with no headaches. I tend to adjust to the heavy side as I really don't like a rifle that is really unpleasant to shoot.

This is an opinion question so you will get some variety. I shot a German clamshell 9.3x74 double which was quite unpleasant to shoot as it was under 7 pounds (don't know the exact weight). It had a small scope at that. I prefer as light a weight as possible but would estimate the scoped gun should be in the 8+ pound area for most people. 9+ is way too much for a 9.3 x 74. My 470 is 9 1/2 pounds and comfortable. The 9.3 x 74 is about 200fps under a 375 so you might judge from that is you have shot those.

There is a rule of thumb from the 19th Century for shotguns. That being ideal weight should be about 96:1 of weight of gun in ounces to weight of projectile in oz. That means a 6 pound gun is about ideal for a 1 oz load and a 7 1/2 pound gun is about ideal for 1 1/4 oz loads. This is with non-autoloaders and hard pads with velocity about 1150 fps as per the old times. It does not translate too directly to rifles as higher velocities are felt more viciously than simply comparing total energy. Bottom line is that it is a personal thing and experience is the best teacher.

A 140-E Merkel 9.3X74R rifle weighs 8.3 lbs, bare! It was bruseing to shoot with full 286 gr loads with the factory hard rubber butt plate. I added a Pachmyer Decelarator, and reshaped the hog back a little and it now is very nice to shoot. I would say with a 1.5-5 Vri-X III eluminated scope mounted in the German twist off mount, it should weigh in at about 9.3 lbs, and I wouldn't want a double lighter than 8.3 lbs bare! I think the Chapuis is too light without a scope.

Someone posted they had a 470NE that was very light, IMO, at 9.3 lbs! I also have a 470NE, 140- Safari Merkel and it weighs in at 10.7 lbs, bare, and it is a handfull with 500 gr TB solids, Federal factory loads. There must be some real supermen around this net, with their feather rifles!

I have that same Merkel 470 model and yes it is heavier than any bolt rifle I have and I agree it definitely is a HANDFULL with full strength 500 gr loads. Managable but certainly no picnic.

Krieghoff Classic Big Five 9,3 X 74 R - Zeiss Diavari ZM 1,25-4 X 24

4,8 kg which means 10,6 lbs if I'm correct. A bit on the heavy side but better too heavy than too light...
