Elmer Keith's 375 NE Double
      #34253 - 03/07/05 07:43 AM

I was just going through Elmer Keiths book Rifles for Large Game looking for infomation in the .400 Whelen. I noticed a picture of Elmer's 375 NE Lancaster double rifle, and over a few pages is a picture of some cartridges. The cartridges include a .375 NE Elmer made for his double using 405 Winchester brass...that cartridge is a .375 2 1/2 Flanged NE and not a 375 Flanged Magnum NE!

Is that right , Elmer's double was a .375 2 1/2 Flanged NE???

And, given the number of times I have read and browsed that book, why didn't I pick that up before...don't answer that!

That's because, when you read for enjoyment, you tend to skip some parts of the text since you've been there before. This is especially true when you've read a book or two more than 3-4 times. You want to get to the good parts.

There ain't no flies on a .375 Express 2.5".

I had a Cogswell & Harrison that was a couple of grades above basic, and it was very accurate. I never shot anything with it that didn't die pretty darn quickly.. but the best feature of the rifle was that it pointed like the best shotgun you ever put to shoulder. Bang, Bang... in less than a second and whatever you were looking at was shot pretty damn well. It did have express sights, but I think it fit so well that they were almost an "extra".

When I win the lottery, I'll get someone to build me a .303 on a small frame that fits me as well as the little C&H... until then, I have to suffer receiving e-mails from the current owner bragging about 1" groups at 50 yards.. Alas

Yep, ol' Elmer (Bless his soul) was a major fan of the .375 2-1/2", although the loads he used in his double were exciting to say the least. Factory ballistics are pretty anemic looking, but I really like the Lancaster single I've had for years - it's one of those rifles that just doesn't miss for some reason.

Elmer used a 500 Boswell and a 476 Westley as his heavy rifles. The Boswell was purchased from George neary and I can't recall where he bought the 476 from.

I re-stocked Elmers .500 Boswell. He used it on his final safari with Truman Fowler,Kenya,1969.Jim Fender, was the writer.(Good reviews on his writing!) Jim has since visited George Neary at his home, and has lot of great "Stuff" to write about him and "The old times" Does anybody know the whereabouts of No.17109,.500x3inch,Boswell? I still have the original stock in my "collection,In anticipation,D.T.

This has to be David Trevallion! Elmer was thrilled with the stock job you did on that rifle! I don't blame him as it was a terrific job. Did you happen to know Cap Wadman? Neary sold him a 577 that had a nasty habit of doubling! Cap never said a word about it but Christ what a surprise.

Welcome to the board stocker. While your anonymity might appear tp be 'blown' I hope you can stay awhile. Sounds like you may have a lot of great "Stuff" to write about yourself, including a good stock of Elmer Keith stories: we look forward to your sharing a few of them!
