Merkel 140-2 Double
      #221386 - 12/12/12 05:38 AM

Hi Everyone: I'm new to Nitro Express and the forums. I'm changing out the front blade sight on my Merkle 140-2, 450-400 & would like to know if anyone can tell me how to safely remove the factory sight. Is it pinned or under pressure from a small spring in the sight base or is it just tapped into a dovetail? Any help will be appreciated before I take on the task. Also, has anyone seen an aftermarket rear express sight for the Merkel's? In looking into dark shadows it is very difficult to make out the top of the express sight and I'm thinking that a white outline or ? will help me see the top of the sight and more quickly line it up with the top of the front blade sight.

Thanks,

TDBIII

Before changing the sight, have you looked at colouring
it with something white or tritium (if you can get it ?).

Also, polishing the front blade so it is really shiny
and / or chaging the angle of the blade made a big diff
to me. If I remember correctly, it was almost vertical
when I got it.

And angle of 45 - 60 degrees gives much better
light reflection back to you.

Then it is a case of sorting the rear sight.

500:

Thanks for the suggestions. I have colored the front sight with a pearl white nail polish and it works great. Only prob is that 8 or 10 times out of the soft gun case and it starts to wear and discolor. Great news though. I just talked with Herman at Steyr/Merkel in Alabama & Merkel makes an aftermarket fiber-optic front sight for the 140-2. I just carefully drive out the exist sight and drive the fiber-optic back in and shoot the rifle, then sand the fiber-optic down until I'm back to "zero" at 50 yds. And, Herman suggested drilling and epoxying fiber-optic dots on the express sight "zeroed" at 50 yds like Merkel does on the 141's. Everyday brings something new........
