Need info on Jeffery double
      #158165 - 03/04/10 07:33 PM

My local gun dealer has got a Jeffery Double in 400 Jeffery. It is a hammergun, but fits me very well, and t would be perfect as a medium bore rifle. I could however need some help with info on the rifle. The pictures are not very good quality, but you should get an impression. It is not in "mint" condition, but this kind of rifle I want to have a "used" look on.

So can anybody tell a little? Approx time of production, round action (like on this one) vs other actions, price range, etc..

Looks nice. Tight.

One of the strongest actions made.

I would like to see the proof marks and initials
that are stamped on the barrels.

Obviously there is very little information to be gleaned from just these four photos; but from what I see, it looks like a good and serviceable rifle.

More must be known about the proof marks, condition of barrels, etc. before an educated opinion can be given as to value.

I like what I see so far.

Isn't a hammer-gun with a top lever unusual? I haven't seen a Jeffery in that configuration before.

I have got a little more info. The barrels are stamped as Nitro proofed, and the stamp is presumably one that was used from 1904. It also read 55/400, which are the load 55 grain cordite and 400 grain bullet. The adress on the rifle is similar to the adress Jeffery have on their shop after 1911. The bore seems to be in good condition, however it looks a little like it is made for blackpowder and lead bullets, since the grooves are kind of "rounded" on top.

Do the barrels have any initials stamped on them,
either in front of the flats where the proof marks
are or near the hook where the fore end attaches ?

Well, seems as we're looking at the same rifle..

This rifling thing, it is something in between lead and copperbullet rifling.

Opinion?

Was that kind of rifling common?

Anyone using jacketed bullets in similar barrels with rounded rifling?

I haven't seen the rifle yet, but will give a more accurate discription when i do.

I'm not familiar with Henry rifling..?

What was the common rifling of the time used in these rifles?

Does anyone on the forum own a similar rifle?

Does anyone have pictures of "Henry-rifling"?

Henry rifleing was designed for paper patched lead bullets and black powder. The key word is Black Powder... Check the proof marks carefully.
