Double Rifle Eye Candy - Max Ern
      #122120 - 24/12/08 01:59 PM

I read about Max Ern and his guns in the last issue of Double Gun Journal and just found his website on the net.

Happy viewing and Good Hunting!

I think I may have a new "favorite maker".
Very proper looking guns and quality to match.
Nice to see somebody offering a rising bite action even if Cal-Rigby can't manage it.

Yes, very nice. Not likely to be within my budget, but there are those more fortunate!

I'll need to wait 50+ years for one to hit the used market at a price I can afford. Of course, then I'll be 104+

Great find, Mehul. I read the article in DGJ also and was impressed.

My pleasure, gentlemen. I know that this information - which would be familiar to advanced members here anyway - is not going to be appreciated more anywhere else than over here.

Cpt Curl,

You have a shot at buying an Ern rifle at 104. I have to think about drooling over and congratulating someone when they buy one and then leave happily in the knowledge that a friend owns one though I certainly never will.

All power to those with the taste and the resources to get something like one of these masterpieces - and I hope there are many. Such artistry must be supported by those who can afford it.

Good hunting, everyone!

Fantastic rifles to say the least! A sidelock 470 starts @ 75,000 US and the boxlock @ 35,000 US. Not bad when you figure what the limey's are charging.

Since Cal-Rigby don't seem to be offering rising bite sidelocks any more, this may be as close as you can get...

Not only do Max and Evelyn make exceptional guns and rifles, but they are also some of the most gracious, personable and generous folks one could want to meet. Highly recommended!

Some information that I have in old journals that I found recently suggests that John Rigby and Co themselves dropped the rising bite actions in 1924 because they were too expensive to manufacture. What Max Ern has done is simply brought back a grand old action design of immense merit. No wonder the man is as respected as he is by connoisseurs.

My hat's off to him.

Mehul, you ought to order one of his rifles so we all can see it.

I would come to Chicago for that myself. His guns are breathtakingly beautiful.

Gentlemens:

Herr Ern and his wife and son were are the Guild show in Reno last month, and I exchanged a few pleasantries with them at my table. I did not know who they were, but it was obvious they were closely examining the work and knew what they were looking at. Sure seemed to be genuinely nice folks. It was only later that I was told who they were. Max Ern is considered by some to be the finest gunmaker in the world.

The son did make an impression on me. I would guess he is in his late twenties, but I am bad at guessing ages. In any event, the young man was very intense and studied the work carefully without a word or expression. With that sort of fire and Max Ern for a mentor it would seem there will be fine work coming out of that family for at least one more generation.

Glenn

CptCurl,

I think I will be able to order one custom rifle when I retire sometime in the near future. As it would be the only custom double that I shall be able to afford, I have a lot of planning to do. It is simultaneously gratifying and frustrating if you understand what I mean. Unfortunately, I am still not fully retired and this will have to wait until I am.

Generalwar,

Knowing of your magnificent collection, am I right in guessing that you're already contemplating commissioning a rifle from Herr Ern? Advance congratulations if you are and I am just one among seveal thousand members here who are waiting for pictures from your side.

Good hunting!
