I am no expert, but 10 pounds 8 oz seems heavy for a 450/400. I wonder if it was built on a frame for a .470. Or possibly the barrels are a replacement set?? (I have no info to this effect - just floating theories.)

Unfortunately most .450/400 we see for sale are too heavy for their caliber and recoil. They were good for shooting tigers out of a tree stand as the recoil wouldn't dislodge you, but if tracking elephant, then you might as well use a heavier caliber for effect. Yes, I know I'll probably hear about that statement, but so be it.

African Hunter
I will say something about your statement.

I think you are right.

This rifle has been discussed quite a bit before on this site. It is a screw grip type action but is apparently off face and in need of a restock. I think someone mentioned the bores weren't very good either. Do a search.

There are a couple of 450-400 on Champlins that may be worth a call.

As far as weight. My double weighs roughly the same. Would I like it to be a bit lighter, probably. But in a well balanced rifle I really dont notice it that much. Most of the brit 450-400's I have seen have been over 10 pounds it seems. The four currently listed on the Champlins site are between 10 pounds 3 ounces and 10 pounds 14 ounces.

Good Luck with your search.

The 450/400's started off on the heavier side and seemed to get "lighter" as the years went on.

I think the comment about "10lbs" being too heavy is
a perpetuated myth - I have shot "lighter" 450/400's and prefer the 9.5lbs+ guns.

In a well balanced double, you do not notice the difference.

Is that a "screw grip" action on that 450/400 3 1/4" DR on

www.cabelas.com ? One of the pics shows the action open

and the third bite looks angle cut to my eye.

BFJ,
That looks like it could be a screw grip (not Webley) but we really need to see a photo looking back at the action face and showing the spindle, before it can be decided.
An "angle cut" on the barrel extension or doll's head is NO proof of the existance of a screw grip third bite.
This "angle cut" has tricked a few into thinking a gun has a screw grip third bite when it really doesn't.

You see a few of this action type around. I think Mickey has a double with a similar action to this one and Mark Sullivan's .577 NE is a similar style, with of course a much larger frame.

They're nice, and I've always wanted one.

Thank you 470. I hope some one posts a picture showing what

you have described. I am thinking that this angle cut, when

engaged by the top lever, would be pushed down a bit more

firmly than if the cut was NOT on an angle, acting like it

was being "screwed" down.

BFJ,
Yes that's true, but a wedge, fitted between that angled cut on the barrel extension and the top of the action frame would create a similar result.
The wedge or bolt can be fitted in a machined recess in the upper action frame forward of the top lever, and is an extension of the top lever and rotated into position as the gun is closed and the top lever returns to it's closed position.
The Webley PHV-1 works like that. It too has that angled cut on the barrel extension but it is NO screw grip because there is no thread or screw.
The other Webley boxlock, the A&WC, is a vastly different third bite system where the angled barrel cut is engaged DIRECTLY by the top lever SPINDLE which has a thread. This is a true screw grip third bite.
