Dangerous Game Rifles

Little bit off topic, but since double rifles are the premier Dangerous Game rifles, I thought I'd see if it fits...

Terry Wieland has just released a new book, "Dangerous-Game Rifles". I've only just begun to read it, but so far has been entertaining and educational (for a non-double owner like myself). Highly recommended if you're interested in hearing Terry's thoughts and his, as always, impeccable research.

I just finished the book and it is excellent. A SUBSTANTIAL portion of this book is devoted to double rifles. Well researched, very well written and highly informative.

Amazon has about the lowest price. Safari Press is selling it for $40 compared to Amazon's $26. That will be about the last time I buy a book from Safari Press. I can understand a slight markup perhaps due to volume considerations, but 35% over a price which is still over cost is a little much.

I just got this book, along with Taylor's "Big Game and Big Game Rifles". For $26, it contains a heckuva lot of information on rifles, and cartridges. Highly recommended!
On a side-note, the Empire Rifles "Express" rifle on the cover is a sweet example of the custom bolt-guns available in big-game calibers, nowadays.

I just got it as well. I'm about halfway into the Mauser Rivals chapter. The DR was quite good and he kinda lays into the Kreighoff's cocking an safety and other stuff.

He doesn't mention Searcy as a manufacturer, much less go into a discussion of Butch's guns. Any guesses as to why?

Did he miss any other manufacturers? Perhaps he did not know about them?

BS in bucket loads.

Terry has been around long enough to know most things.

I would say that there is some history in the background,
that is why some writers leave things out or don't put a whole lot in about things.

Spring,

Great "signature" photo you have there. Is that a small water buff horn in the photo?

Not off topic at all.

At $26 at Amazon sounds like an excellent price.

Nitro,
Thanks for shortening and clarifying that link in the original post. I'll learn that someday... Just got in too big a hurry I guess.

Nitrox,
That picture was taken of my gun by a fellow when it was used in a picture in The Double Gun Journal. I don't know what kind of horn he used in that pic. Think it was a water buff? Considering water buff are pretty rare in our neighborhood, it's interesting he found one lying around...

Spring

As I said, a very nice picture. The Double gun Journal always has excellent photography.

I like these "double rifle 'still-lifes'".

The horn looks flat with the perpendicular grooves. It looks like a smaller water buffalo horn. But I asked for confirmation so am not 100% sure.

Got anymore photos of your double rifle from the magazine?

NitroX,
They had two pics of it in there. Below is page two. In my sig is a cropped portion of the pic that they used on the first page (here's page one) . As you would imagine, I saved that issue.....

Thank you, bulldog563. I'm at my office at the moment and the Double Gun Journal issue it was in is at my home. I'm pretty sure it was in the Winter 2004 edition and they had an article on double rifles in it. Do you keep the older issues of that mag around? They do have some incredible guns in there sometime.
The gun was also in an issue of Sporting Classics a couple of years ago.

Will look through Winter 2004.

Yes, I keep older issues of DGJ. Almost have a complete set.

I found out I told you the wrong issue...It was their Winter 2003 edition--not 2004--my gun was in. . There were some great looking doubles featured in that article. As you well know, they primarily focus on shotguns, but it was nice in that edition to see them give some attention to the rifle side.

A good addition to any library. Just got mine from Amazon $26.26 delivered. A far cry from the $40 plus shipping from Safari Press. One can NEVER have too many gun books, bullets, powder, primers or guns.

I find this book to be one of the best, and well ballanced books on firearms in my library! There are some things I disagree with the author on, but none are serious, just difference in opinion, nothing more!
I also bought this book from Amazon, at a generous discount, down to $29.95 but the book is well worth the $40 asking price! Fine book!
