Changing sights on a Merkel
      #66027 - 18/11/06 12:49 AM

I've got a Merkel 140 in .470, and can't say I'm overly impressed with the standard sights...

I'd very much like a wide shallow backsight, with platinum mid-line or something of the sort..coupled with an Ivory front sight. or perhaps there are other frontsights that are good in dense bush and won't glare when used in the open at midday?

Who(/does anyone ) deliver such custom parts?

Anyone who has tried some sights that are particularly good?
I'm contemplating about hunting moose with the DR next year, and have to pass a certain national shootingtest that require 3 hits within a circle of 12-14" at 100m offhand so they can't be too coarse..

I can do that now (on a good day that is! ) with the current sights as they are nice to use on targets. But I find them hard to use in a hurry... Besides the blueing on the front sight is getting worn and I find it to be a bit hard to see in bright light..

Go to NECG's site

www.newenglandcustomgun.com

I'm glad to see there's someone else who just doesn't like the Merkel sights, I thought I was the only one. I'd called the folks who import them and didn't get a positive response from them. Just change them to a V/bead combination and it makes a world of difference. That, a trigger job, and a new recoil pad was all that was needed on mine before I sold it.

Bonde,

Recknagel makes what you want, and the Norwegian importer is Ragnar Hansen in Vestfossen.

However, I don't know if he has much (any?) experiance with double rifles, even though he has a lot of big bore experiance. He is also known to be a bit hard to deal with...

Another person you could contact here is Per Arne Vågsland in Drangedal. I've been told that he can regulate double rifles, and I have the impression that he might do more double rilfe work that Hansen.

Bonanza,

I take it you are thinking of my "location" where it says: "Laying in bed with my damaged leg up...".

I have been bicycling a lot this last year, at least 3 times a week to stay in shape, besides other training. Mostly on dirt tracks and gravel roads, or "spinning" indoors at a gym depending on the weather.

In mid July I was out bicycling, and as usual wearing "click in" bike shoes (with Shimano SPD pedals). I’ve crashed numerous times before, and the pedals have loosened as they should. However, due to the angle I fell this time, they didn’t let go of the left shoe. Luckly I was very close to the house where my wife and children were when this happened...

So there I was, laying on my back before I knew what had happened, besides hearing a nasty cracking sound. My left foot was literally twisted 90 degrees to the left, with my heel pointing out the 90 degrees out to the right!

I start to call out for for my wife, who thankfully heard me after a while and came running down to where I was. I send her off to call for medical help, and then we start the long wait, while I stayed down on my back, holding my leg up from the ground.

Since this happened on an island, the ambulance personnel has to first drive to the nearest marina, and then get picked up by an rescue boat, and then drive out to where we were. This took an hour. And was quite uncomfortable for me while I was waiting. When they eventually arrived, they gave me a shot of morphine, but due to the nature of the injury, couldn’t wait for the drug to kick in before twisting my foot back into place (at least almost all the way). This was because the danger of virtually no blood flow to the foot, due to the angle the foot was in. Which could have lead to the foot dying, and having to be amputated. When they did this, I’m surprised you didn’t hear me scream and curse all the way around the world! The ambulance personnel had never actually seen a foot twisted so far over, and I could see that they were kind of worried. Finally I was lifted up and carried to the boat, and eventually got to the hospital where they did a final adjustment to get the foot totally straight.

Then later in the evening I was operated on, which I think took about 3-4 hours. They put in a metal plate, screws and even some metal wire (Which I haven’t seen done before). The next day I was sent in a new ambulance up to Oslo, where I stayed in the hospital for a week before being sent home. I was then for the most part confined to bed for a couple of months, but it didn’t make much of a difference to me since the pain was rather intense, and I didn't feel up to doing much anyway.

I'm still forced to use crutches, and will need them for quite some time it seems since I am not able to walk properly. I also can't keep my leg down for more than a few hours at a time, before I have to lay back and elevate it a bit. The pain can still be quite intense. Even though it's been 4 months now since the accident. I go to physiotherapy 3 times a week, and will in addition be starting water therapy with a physiotherapist once a week at the hospitals heated swimming pool next Thursday. It looks like this will need to continue for quite a long time.

They predict that it’ll take at least a year to recover fully. If it recovers fully. They’re not quite sure, but I certainly hope it does. I know of some other people who have had similar ankle injuries, and they've used 2-3 years before they could walk normally again. And some of them needed several operations.

So it's safe to say that things could be going better.

Erik

Erik,

I'm so sorry to here this. Stay tough Nitro brother. I feel for you literally. It's been two months since my motorcycle accident and I have months of recovery and possible surgery ahead. Push through the pain and let the body do its thing. Keep your spirits high!

Blair,

You are our other member on the "sick list."

I hope your recovery is going well also. Colorado had given us the short take on your crash. I'm not sure we're really up to the full detailed version.

Are you back to work yet?

Best,

As Erik has pointed out RECKNAGEL are the sights for the Merkel.
I replaced my post sight with a 2.5mm Silver Bead (11000-2560).
The express sight with one folding is (15400-3025).
Good sling swivels for the Merkel are (20000-3025).
Cheers,
Adam

Roscoe,

I'm returning to work on December 1st. My disability insurance, albeit great, has just dropped to 60%. I can live on that for a couple of pay checks, but I'm really ready to get back to work. I expect to get the go ahead from my doctor next week, but I'm no way close to being healed. My broken humurus healed without surgery and the radial nerve seems to be getting better, but it's my right hand that is really screwed up. I'll start the painfull physical therapy soon. I really don't care about the pain as long as I regain full use of my hand. I'm sure Erik thinks the same about his ankle. My family and friends have been sooo wonderful to me. It is true, women want to nurse men when they are injured

The skinny on the wreak is one of those "why me" moments? A 59 year old homeless man decided to cross the interstate on foot! I plowed into him at over 65 MPH, killing him and nearly me. However, I can still wake up to blue skys and my beautilfull eight year old daughter who I can hold in my arms and kiss. I got nothing to complain about in the scheme of things.

Thanks for keeping me on the sick list;
Blair

Blair,

I know exactly what you mean with the "why me" feeling during the split second an accident happens, and you have no control over it. It's a nasty feeling. I hope you'll regain full use of your hand soon, and that the pain will eventually go away.

Just make sure you do excatly what the physiotherapist tells you to. Even though it will hurt. There is quite a bit of truth to the old saying: "No pain no gain". You might also find that the pain will increase substantially on the day after therapy. On the otherhand, don't blindly accept too much pain without telling the therapist, as there is a fine balance between just enough, and over doing it. Over doing it will naturally be bad in the long run. So it's better to use a few extra months if needed, to make sure it's done right.

All in all though, the thing that's most important is that we can hold our children in our arms, and have family that cares for us. Just like you mention.

Erik

Bonde,

I found Vågslands website. And have confirmed from several people that he definately has more double rifle experiance than Ragnar and Roger Hansen. It appears that Vågsland can also regulate double rifles himself, while I've been told that Hansen sends them out of house to get this done (although I don't know where Hansen sends them).
