.470 recoil
      #61213 - 16/08/06 02:54 AM

I dont have much of a problem with the recoil of my .470 to the shoulder, the place it gets me is the cheek. I about bloodied my nose the other day due to the severe muzzle rise, I don't see any alternative but to keep your face nice and flush on the stock. Any helpful advice on how to manage this would be greatly appreciated.

You shoul d have a top end stockmaker adjust the cast for you. That can be done by bending the stock, or taking a bit of wood off.

Sounds like the gun doesn't fit you that well.

I also suggest taking the gun to a stocker and
getting them to adjust the stock to better suit you.

FYI, I broke a tooth from one of my 500 Nitro's
due to it not fitting me very well - sock came up and
hit the bottom of the jaw ! - All the dentist saw was money !!!

Alternatively, get a Beartooth Products Comb Raiser
which not only allows you to raise the top of the comb but
also provide cushioning. PM me if needed.

Can anyone suggest a top end stock maker?

I recently spoke with Duane Weibe about a restock. My rifle is a sidelock with an extended top strap, which adds up to time and money. He thought he could get it back to me in about a year.

On the other hand, bending a stock to add cast is cheap and relatively quick. Sometimes a stock can be bent to provide less drop too, or if the rifle isn't a collector, a peice of wood can be let into the comb to raise it. A good job of this is harder to see than you might think.

I had a good gunsmith take some wood off my rifle since I was advised that rifles with extended tangs are not good canidates for stock bending. Removing a suprisingly small amount of wood produced a much better fitting rifle. I was in the shop as the gunsmith removed the wood and it was remove, try - remove, try...til we got close then remove, try, shoot...til it was right. I would advise being there if you can be, small amount of wood = big change in fit.

I took some shooting lessons and this resulted in a very different "Gun Mount" for me.

It changed everything as far as recoil and accuracy etc.

If you have never been to a coach I recommend it.

I agree totally with BigFiveJack! I use to "crawl" my stock which use to bang my cheek pretty bad. After some coaching I don't get hurt anymore shooting the big bores. Placement really makes a difference.
