He doesn't use a third bite on any of his guns, currently. All of them are the double underbolt.

In reply to:

I've been looking at Searcy's web site and I can't find any reference too, or picture of a third bite on his guns.

Does he only use the A&D long bar action and Purdy double bolt?

Is this also true on the .577 he has listed?

Thanks,
Colorado

The B. Searcy double rifles made today have a double under bolt (PURDEY type) The actions are not A&D but are made from scratch, by Butch, from Barstock stainless of very tough number, and do not need a third bite. his actions are sized to the cartridge they are chambered to.
His first doubles, made years ago, (early1980s) were converted Browning BSS actions, fitted with a third lock-up in the form of a rib extention. The actions were re-heat treated after the fitting was done, and there is one example of these that had over 3000 rounds of 470NE shot through it before it was sold to a PH in Africa, where it is still poping Buffalo, as far as I know!
The third lock-up is probably not needed on most modern double rifles today, and in any event, are only back-up safeties.
The double rifles one sees, that are off face, were more likely to have been put off face by poor care in the hook, and pin area, letting wear of these mateing surfaces loosen the fit, not because of the lack of a third bite, doll's head, or hidden extention.
I'd say if you want a Searcy don't pass it because of the lack of a third fastener, because with normal care, and use of proper pressured ammo, you will never shoot a 577NE enough in your life time to take his rifle off face! IMO, it is a non-issue!

I looked at a Searcy 470 on the Browning action today at a Gun show. the current owner claimed that the previous owner had it gone completely through by Searcy a year or so ago and it looked to be in nice condition.

Wood was good, checkering crisp, blueing nice and little sign of any wear.

The owner claimed the bullets crossed at 20 yards and had a 12 inch spread at 50. He claimed this was all that was needed as Elephants were pretty big and hard to miss. He also claimed that it was the best shooting Double he had seen.

83 grains of R15 with Dacron filler/ Woodleigh Bullet.

The rifle was also off the face. You could see through the crack in the breach the full height. With the rifle open you could feel it wiggle by shaking the stock.

US$8950.00

No point in arguing with an expert like that.

I think I must agree on the point of arguing with an X- Spert!

Eight thousand five hundred Yankee Dollars.

The surprising thing was that the rifle was in nice shape and off the face. I doubt Searcy has seen it since he made it.

And if something is wrong with the gun, with Butch's warranty, he'll fix it for free.

Anybody who thinks he can get close to $9K for a converted BSS is smoking dope. I figure something like $3500 would be ok, if the gun were on face and in regulation.

Colorado,
You have brought up a good point there.
You are right that a number of different problems can create an off the face condition.
It is claimed that these BSS shotgun to rifle conversions were fitted with a third fastener.
What type of third fastener was used, do you know?
