long shots
      #30921 - 12/05/05 04:15 AM

I'm planning to take my Krieghoff Classic double in 375 H&H on a plainsgame hunt this summer. It is regulated at about 100 yds. I am concerned about longer shots with it. Compensating for drop is not a problem, what concerns me it horizontal drift. Does anyone have any idea how much the bullit will move laterally at 200 or 250 yds? I know that each rifle and load is different, I'm just looking for a rough estimate. I am looking for a range longer than 100 yds so that I can test it myself.

Terry
Is your double scoped?
I tested my 9,3x74R Chapuis [with scope] at 200 and 300 yards and was suprised how well it shot that far away. I have killed a coyote at 271 yards, firing kneeling, and a kudu at a little over 300 yards in Zim using a bush for support.
I have shot a caribou at 150 yards [iron sights] with my 450/400,firing off hand.
Test your double at 200 and 300 yards.

If properly regulated, it shouldn't drift laterally at all, unless you have a cross-wind. Use ballistic software to calculate wind-drift.

If your rifle is causing lateral drift, chuck it away!

Yes it is scoped. I'm going to have to find a longer range to practice. I don't know what it will go at 200 or 300 yds as I've never shot it at anything that far away.

During the latest DRSS hunt in Texas, I saw two of NE450No2's videos. One showed him shotting a bolder at a rather far distance...his double pinged that rik each time! If my memory serves me correctly, it was his Chapuis...

clark,
The double I shot the kudu with was my 9,3 Chapuis.
I was using my 450/400 3 1/4" on the 300 yard rock.

Criminal, absolutly criminal, anyone that would scope a double rifle would defile his sister, chase rabbits and howl at the moon, hang around school yards with a bag of gumdrops for bait!! Shame shame!!

Ray

One would scope a double rifle because he shoots better with a scope.
Ain't nothin wrong with an occasional howl, I never took gumdrops to that school, only lollypops, and my sister looks a lot better than a certain dog with which you are reported to be acquainted.

Another way to see it would be that it takes a man to shot a double with a scope without getting in to the half moon club

Thanks Mickey

We did an expansion test in gelantin a couple of weeks ago with a 500 grain Rhino Bullet and that one looked fantastic, I had to leave the bullet with Rhino Bullets for them to use at a fair but I hope to have photos soon.

Christer,
Give us an update on how well your Blaser Double shoots.
Does the scope seem to effect regulation?
When the bbls heat up does it effect the group size.
Have you shot it at 100 and 200 yards?
Have you tried 350 grain bullets?
