Book on building double rifles
      #304112 - 16/08/17 01:23 PM

Well today started off pretty good for me it was my first day at being 60 years old and I am still upright!! A good friend and customer of my stopped buy today and the day just keeps getting better,he came in my shop and handed me a brand new book and said happy birthday! It is a book on building double rifles on shotgun actions by W.Ellis Brown and it is even signed by Mr.Brown. What a great day and gift.

Rifle57,

It's a great book.

Ellis demystifies the "black art" of building these doubles.......especially regulation.

I've about read mine to pieces and will continue to do so.

Mine is signed by Ellis and three other collaborators in the book.

Ellis has another edition in the works but "work and bills" is interfering with it's progress.

One of my most treasured books and never far from hand.

So far I have just thumbed through it and it looks very good. Also I live only 15 miles from Mr. Brown I am going to see if I might be able to go and meet him and visit a little while.

You missed the "elephant hunt" 2 weeks ago at Mr. Brown's house. It is the 2nd Saturday in August every year. Good times had by all.

Ellis' Elephant Hunt would certainly be a great event to attend..........especially with a homegrown double rifle.

I'd need to camp at his place for quite a while to get him to answer some of my questions.

I have been reading this book the last few days and I will say it is very good and has a lot of good info and photos of building a double rifle on a shot gun action!

Rifle57,

You might also read Vic Venters article "Jointing on the Circle" (?) and take a look at Jack Rowe's dvds about rejointing a side x side shotgun action.

These will give you a bit more detail on jointing, clearances and "spring".

Vic's article can be found in back issues of Shooting Sportsman magazine and in his book ..............that I can't think of the name of at the moment. I think it is also available from Shooting Sportsman magazine.

Ellis is a great guy and very interesting to visit with. I also was able to see some rifles he has built and they were very nice.I hope to spend a little more time in the future with him.

Rifle57,

I've just found two other articles that would prove very informative for your build.

Forgive me for pushing Vic Venter's "barrow" again.

From July/August 2013 edition of Shooting Sportsman magazine, Gun Craft column, "Spring" by Vic Venters discussing the importance of not having the barrels down on the water table of the action allowing for some spring.

From May/June 2013 edition of Shooting Sportsman magazine, Gun Craft column, "Re-jointing with a new hinge pin" discussing this process.

I can recommend these articles to any one who deals with hinged firearms as, eventually, you'll end up with one that "has the shakes" and needs rectifying and I know there are many among you who'll want to do the job yourself.

So far I only have the one book that I started this post about but I have read most of it and I has been really good reading and some great photos on building a double rifle from a shotgun action.
