JUST WONDERING???
      #154273 - 20/02/10 10:37 AM

As scary as it sounds, I had a thought this week. It's based on a posting made by Cpt. Curl. He talked about a poor boy DR using 7.65 Arg. barrels. That got me thinking about either barrels removed from old Lee enfields or even the VERY common and cheap Mosin nagant barrels. I own and shoot two M-39 mosins, and they share the same bore diameter as a .303 I believe. If you were to do this, what do you suppose the final weight would be too much? I'd love to hear thoughts on this. I would probably look into doing it on a 20 gauge frame.

Just IMO..

Why bother using old used tubes when you are going to have that much work tied up in this project? The end results will be iffy before it's tested. New barrels aren't that expensive.

it's just a thought. I'm thinking of a cheap whitetail gun. Not something that'll shoot 1/2 MOA. It wouldn't be my NM M14.

I thought about 20 gauge rifled shotgun barrels...cheaper than dirt has them for $110.Should work as well,
PLUS really low presure

You could go with either 303 British or 7.62x54R. The 303 would be the more classic way to go. The 7.62x54R would work fine too and allow you to share ammo with your Russian bolt actions, not to mention these days it is easier to find in the US. I'd go with the 303, but that would be up to you and they both have about the same ballistics. A strong 20ga would likely work as a donar. But before starting, I highly suggest Ellis Brown's book.

What I was referring to was using a mosin barrel and re-chambering it for the 303. They share the same bore diameter. I would definitely prefer a 303. I think the ruskie round would blow the gun! You can find the russian barrels in better shape and cheaper than the enfields.

Those Nagants were made around WW1 (about 100 years ago)and have been used since then so they are worn. To what degree no one knows.
Can you take them out for a test drive before you buy them to see if they are any good before you spend all that time and effort in them only to find that they might not be good?

I'd say spend a few bucks on new tubes.

They were made up through WW2. If you have some Nagant barrels with good rifling, I don't see why not. Chances are that you won't find new barrels made to the dimensions you need anyway. So if you're going to be turning them down to size anyway, why not save some money by using some surplus barrels?
