Austrian single shot rifle

This little rifle is quite unique, I think.
You may enjoy this, and maybe one of you knows more about it.

Action is a Martini-type tilting block, and yes, it's a take-down.
Signed on barrel and action: "St. Jllichmann in Wien". I have not found any reference of this gunmaker.
Vienna BP proof ca. 1896 and later Nitro reproof.
Caliber is 9.3x57R/360, the continental brother of the .360 Express 2 1/4.
Has nice little features like flip-up peep sight, cartridge trap in the buttplate, stag horn forend cap.
The rifle has seen quite some use, the wood has dents and scratches, metal has some stains and rust scars, but technically everything is fine.
The bore is very good, and the rifle shoots as good as I can aim with open sights.
This one is waiting for a roe deer.

What a great looking rifle, quality everywhere. Man I love the full lenght oct bbl. Have you ever had it completely out of the forend wood? I bet the bblchannel fit is unreal. The target speaks well for the bore as well as the shooter.

Dale,

I never took the forend off. But you see some of the barrel channel when taking off the barrel, the inletting appears perfect.

I'd be interested to receive full reloading information on your target loads. Presumably you are using R901, what projectiles were used.
I have a 360 2 1/4 inch BPE from which I have never been able to achieve acceptable accuracy

I also have a 360x2 1/4 BPE double that doesn't shoot well. Both barrels have a double taper,.366 in front of chamber,.3595 between 18-20" and .366 at muzzle. If anyone knows why I would like to know.

Back on the internet after many weeks problems with my server and I see this!!!

A very nice rifle in every respect, octagonal barrel (always!, full length fore end with that fore end

Thanks for the interest.
In case I did not answer to the earlier questions: this rifle is a true 9.3 mm, I can use bullets for the 9.3x72R. I have tried 193 grain jacketed bullets from RWS and DWM (both "historic") and new S&B, and the 193 copper-plated lead bullet from Haendler&Natermann, all shot well. Best powders for me are R901 and SR4759. But these bullets should not fit for any British .360.

Interesting rifle with nice lines. I’ll add that I'm one of the bunch that think the antler burr nose pieces on the full stock single shot rifles are a nice touch. They remind me of the goatees that many of us are sporting these days.

There has been some discourse here on the Forum about the burr nose caps. Said simply, I like them alot. Seems to me, to be, the finishing touch on a Kipplauf, Ischler, etc......whatever they are referred to.

About horn nose caps and that Austrian "Ischl style":

"Die Bezeichnung "Ischler Stutzen" ist die Sammelbezeichnung für die legendären, einschüssigen Hahn-Pirschbüchsen, die Kaiser Franz Joseph I. benützte. Das Wort "Ischler" bezog sich auf den in Bad Ischl arbeitenden Büchsenmacher Wolfgang Leithner, das Wort "stutzen" auf eine kurzläufige "gestutzte" Büchse mit einer Lauflänge von(50) 55-60 cm. Die eleganten Jagdgewehre waren ganz geschäftet, mit einer Hirschrose an der Laufmündung bei den älteren Konstruktionen. Bis in die sechziger Jahre des 19. Jahrhunderts waren es großkalibrige Perkussionsgewehre mit Kupferzündhütchen zum Abfeuern von Bleigeschoßen und später, in der Konstruktion des Lancaster-Gewehres, mit Zentralzündung und Kaliber 8 mm für Halbstahlmantel-Geschoße."

Translation: "Ischler Stutzen" is the collective term for the legendary single shot hammer stalking rifles that were used by emperor Franz Joseph I. The word "Ischler" related to the gunmaker Wolfgang Leithner working in Bad Ischl, the word "stutzen" to a short barrelled rifle with a barrel of (50) 55-60 cm. The elegant hunting rifles had a full stock, with a stag rosette at the muzzle in the older types. Until the 60s of the 19th century these were large caliber percussion rifles for copper primers, for shooting lead bullets and later, in the construction of Lancaster rifles, with central primer and caliber 8 mm for jacketed bullets.."

Leithner was working from ca. 1850 to 1880, and indeed he had his special syle, often using an ornate trigger guard resembling those found on wheellock rifles and early flintlocks, and plenty of stag horn, not only in the nose cap, but also for ramrod thimbles or in the patchbox cover - maybe because this goes so well with the stag horn buttons on your Loden coat and Lederhosen?? Anyway, it seems he created a fashion!
