An interesting piece of walnut on old Purdey I encountered recently. Anybody know what you would call that kind of figuring? Peter Ryan

Semi fancy quarter sawn timber. I believe there is a knothole and an incipient branch as shown in the majority of dark(er) contrast. (properly sawn for strength and lack of movement over the years)

That would be called "well figured" in any auction description!

Looks like it was taken from the trunk rather than the burl or root.
