Standing rests for shooting big bores
      #378868 - 25/08/23 01:55 AM

Post photos or diagrams of your standing rests for big bore rifles.

As most here know, felt recoil from a bench rest feels more severe. Harsh recoil is not wise for good accurate shooting. Hooting from a standing position is the most inaccurate however. So using shooting sticks is better. But no rest for the butt. A standing bench rest is best.

I use the bonnet of my Landcruiser as a substitute. This still leaves one bent over forward a little. No ideal. Nor can this method be used on a proper rifle range. One might use a post if the range permits it. I'm lucky as I use my own property.

I think I've seen a quad or "quin" pod, with a tripod at the front and a bar extending back to another leg or two. In theory the rear part could provide support for the butt. Such might be used at a range or ad hoc use.

Does anyone have one, use one? Any links, photos?

Post photos or diagrams of your standing rest, standing benches.

There might be past threads. I remember some good ones. Have to do a search. A suitable topic for a pinned post.

Unfortunately, you have to regulate all weapons from the same bench rest. It is a hard work with high-recoil weapons, but if you equip this stand with sandbags and pillows for the elbow, you can do quite a bit.

I don't have pictures of a range that I use as I have to adapt to the various shooting ranges.

As an example this picture.

For some reason I can't post the pictures, but you could look at the 4 Stable Sticks and the Viper-Flex Pro shooting sticks. Both are quad sticks designs. These are a far better design than the tripod with extension concept.

Will have a look for them.

GV, in the "manual", thanks. I should have seen that then. My memory ... A small table on top of a sitting shooting bench, good idea. Such could be used by those needing to use proper target ranges.

I like the idea of a bench, whether for on top of an existing bench, or the whole bench, with extendable legs. To setup the height for the conditions or individual person.

At the public range here the standing post area has adjustable ammo trays mounted on the posts. There's a t-handle locking piece on the back of it that you can loosen by hand and shift the tray up the pole and rotate to either side of the pole. I've adjusted one up to the correct height and then dropped a sandbag in it.

I hang onto the rifle like normal but rest my forestock hand on the sandbag. I've done this with my 500NE and it works well.

No photos except for this one showing the posts and trays:

Wow and Adelaide made. A transportable Flatpack able shooting bench. Reasonable price as well.

Not standing but I'd get one for sitting. Perhaps could be fitted for a second floor for standing shots.

grandveneur and mauserand9mm,

Great post, guys. I like your ideas of good support in shooting at the range. Both the small bench on a shooting bench and the adjustable tray with bag are great. Those are better than my Primos Trigger Stick GEN3 whuich I use for shooting support.

I think I can take one of the small stools and place it on top of the shooting bench at my club, place a bag on the stool and shoot from there.
