My new big bore
      #2418 - 20/04/03 12:27 AM

OK here is the promised pics of my "new" big bore. Not exactly new as it dates back to 1875 but it should turn out to be a shooter and I hope great fun.

It is a Martini Henry Rozier .577/.450 which was originally loaded for blackpowder. This rifle was built as a sporter and Rozier (or Rosier?) was an Australian gunmaker or assmebler based in the Colony of Victoria.

Points nicely and hopefully will shoot as well. If I can get it shooting hopefully will try it out on a pig or two this year.

Very, very nice ! Please make sure you have it checked out by a good gun smith to make sure it's safe to shoot so you don't have a big, unwanted surprise.

The old Martni there are a whle bunch of them in RSA as well but a lot of them have been rechembered or shal I say rebarreld to 303 or .22 as it was difficult to get ammo.

The recoil pad is a bit of a dog and needs replacing but can stay for the moment. A nice solids red recoil pad to look the part.

Some of these rifles in Australia have been rebarrelled as well. The .218 Bee's and similar are usually made from the small ring Martinis. One of these would be very nice as well - oneday.

When in Jo'burg I admired the Martini's and old Mausers hanging in the walls in restaurants and I thought they were great.

I may have missed it, but have you checked the bore diameter? I recall discussions of several commercial 577/450s that had .458 bores as opposed to the larger military bores. Looks like a fine rifle for a little clean-up and then some pig smacking. I'd like to find one like it.
Best.

The project being discussed elsewhere. Not currently, but starting to get it underway.

Bought as a wall hanger. Then registered during an election in case of "problems", it became a safe queen. Never was a priority to get shooting. But would like to now.
