And what do they use their rifles in this calibre for?

I'm building one on a p17 Enfield action if the barrel ever shows up.answer why not.going to have hammer of the gods engraved on it. Hope to take on a black bear hunt this fall.overkill oh yeah.dont want jack the bear to suffer .ever sense I watched a hunting show where the girl shot a whitetail with a 12 GA. Slug and if fell over dead without even a quiver I.ve decided to go back to big bores.gotten to old and fat to chase them for miles.all stupid answers I guess

One of the members of the local BGRC has a .505 Gibbs. Guess it is used on targets!!! Maybe buffalo on occasion.

JG, thinking of getting one? Elephant or buffalo on the menu?

Big cartridge.

I picked up an MRC PH in .505 Gibbs. Getting ready to send a Trijicon RMR off to be fitted with a QD mount for it. Assuming I sight it in instead of endlessly procrastinating, will try it on pigs.

I own a .505 Gibbs built for me by Lon Paul on a Granite Mountain action. At age 77, I will never hunt with it, but after years of experimenting with and using my own design of a wildcat .505, the .505 SRE, I decided that I wanted to try the real thing. (My wildcat accounted for one black rhino, three elephants and five Cape buffalo.)

Very nice, the barrel looks in good proportion to the rest of the rifle, sometimes large bore rifles do not. Fantastic.

Beautiful..

I thought that such a big booter may have had a straighter stock.

I owned one, 20 years back.
H&H on a Brevex action.
At least too hard kicking for me.

I have one built by Ryan Breeding here in the United States. With the scope, sling, and a magazine full of cartridges, it weighs over 14 pounds. Despite the weight and the straight stock, (almost zero drop at the comb), it's a very heavy recoil....probably at or above my tolerance. More than my .577 NE or my .600 Overkill. I have not hunted with it, and probably won't.....alas, I'm getting pretty old, too. Here are a couple of photos of it:

Cheers. Chip.

That is a really cool looking rifle..short and compact for the bush...

If you want I can try it out for you next year while in Africa and file a report..

I have one built in South Africa in 1960 on a BRNO 602 action. Full octagon barrel with integral quarter rib and front sight. Love it.
