how much weight for a rifle chambered in 585 HE

im looking to have a rifle chambered in 585 HE made for me but im unsure of how heavy the rifle should be. my primary plan for the rifle is to load it down to 577 NE 3" velocities (2050-2100fps) and use it as a proper DG rifle.

my first thought is 12 pounds but since I have no experience with the 577 NE 3" cartridge Im unsure if that's suitable.

what are your thoughts?

I have only shot 2 577's in my lifetime..when I was helping the local Westley Richards shop do some testing for consignment guns..if I remember correctly they were in excess of 11 lbs--around 11.5 to 12.5--know my WR in 470 Nitro is around 10.5 lbs. and it is very pleasant to shoot..think you would be very close at 12..but am sure others with more experience can shed some more light on it..

Also I would check Guns International..look at what the .577's are weighing in at..

My wildcat .577 VSRE weighs in at 12 pounds and I use it with .577 NE equivalent loads: 750 grain bullet at 2050 fps. I don't think you will want to go much lighter than this. The recoil is not painful, it is just irresistible, for me, anyway. Every shot fired moves me back two paces. I have never used on dangerous game because I could not feel confident that so much room would always be available.

Hello, i just weighed my 585 Hubel its just over 5 kilo ,11 pound thought it was heavier than that ! need to get more accurate scales and check it again ,mine is not bad to shoot at 750gr s at 2000 fps the more you shoot it, the better you get used to it .Mine has been restocked with larger more surface area on the butt than standard Ruger N01, which i think is over looked ,and needed more on big bores ,look at the A Square rifles and their butt area .Contact Ed Hubel hes very helpful and good guy ! and enthusiastic about his round ,which i think is definately one of the better New rounds, unlike alot of others which are pointless IMO and achieve nothing new ,you can use this round in a single shot ,bolt action and probably even a double if you pushed enough $$$ in front of a double manufacturer,i think 12 pounds would be a good number !

Ripp, thanks for the suggestion. I checked out GI and found 12 pounds was indeed the average (at least on GI) for the 577 NE 3".

xausa no offence intended but you might want to try a different stance or maybe lean into the rifle a little more. something is not right if the gun is actually forcing you backwards!


500Boswell, believe it or not, Ed Hubel is the gentleman building my rifle. I had a talk with him earlier today about weight and he agreed that 12 pounds was ideal for the cartridge. he has been great to talk to and has been more then willing to answer any questions or give advice.

I also agree with your thoughts on the 585 HE. its a very well thought out cartridge which solves a number of the issues associated with trying to make a .585" cartridge for a bolt action rifle. head spacing is handled by a belt instead of trying to make do with a tiny shoulder. instead of going with a seriously rebated rim to fit a smaller action he used a .505 Gibbs rim which will allow for much more reliable feeding.

I actually think 20+ lbs would be about the only way I would pull e trigger on 585.

Nah its not that bad ,if i can shoot one anyone can ,apart from a friend of mine who dreaded shooting an 8x68 of mine and rolled up a jacket so he had about one foot of padding between the butt and his shoulder he he

I was planning on having a .585 built, was going to aim around 13lbs.

Having held (didnt get to shoot) a 6 bore that weighed 14lbs 10ounce i don't think i could lug 13lbs comfortably. Yeah yeah, get some muscle :P

Gave up on the .585 dream awhile back. Sold the action i had set aside for it today.
