375 x 2 1/2 Bullet Weights
      #236712 - 16/10/13 12:09 AM

I seem to remember a reference to an original loading of a 300 gr bullet in this cartridge as well as the more usual 270. Howver, I cannot dig it up.

Am I imagining this or can someone else put me on track to the reference?

Thanks

Most of the loads are for 270's. However, Westley Richards shows a 320 grain loading in their 1912 catalogue.

I have a Dickson Steyr regulated for that load. It is made much earlier than 1912, so it's possible the load was available right from the start of that cartridge's production - around 1900, I believe.

COTW lists only one factory cordite load - 40gr. with 270gr. at 2,000fps.

I think also, the 375 x 2 1/2 was loaded for both bolt actions
and double rifles so some variation may exist.

See what Lee Speeds were shot with.

Cogswell made a lot of Doubles in that calibre as well.

my mannlicher is proofed for the 320 grains - 40 grains cordite load but I never see a cartridgge or catalog listing.

some times ago there was another rifle on nitroexpess wit a similar stamp but I dont remember it this was a double, a lee speed or another mannlicher.

My Lee Speed and my Webley 1902 are both marked for the 270 gr load.

My "Sporting Ammunition Catalogue" by ICI of date unknown lists Kynoch ammunition with a load of 40grs smokeless with a 270gr solid, soft or split bullet for the flanged 375 x 2 1/2" cartridge and a load of 43grs smokeless with the same range of 270gr bullets for the rimless 375 x 2 1/2" cartridge.

The ballistics for these two cartridges are also listed if you want that info.

Bill Flemming, in his book "British Sporting Rifle Cartridges" lists bullet weights from a 200 gr Velopex to 320 gr. The 270 is most numerous followed by the 300. Kynoch and Eley each listed only one loading of the 200 with 40 gr of Cordite. Eley had another using 40 gr of Modite. Kynoch shows only one load using the 320 gr bullet and 40 gr of Cordite. Overall powders range from 37 gr of Cordite to 40 gr with most loads being in the 40 gr weight. Powders listed are Cordite, most often, in 40 gr, Axite, 2nd most at 39 gr, and Modite at 40 gr. A total of 48 loads are listed using various bullets and powders between the two manufacturers.

Forgot to mention, Eagle27, the 43 gr load was for the shorter 375 rimless as you mentioned. That cartridge was about 1/4" shorter and is also known as the 9.5x56 or 57. The Brits called it the 375 Rimless NE. It can be formed from 30-06 or similar cases.

Absolutely correct, the rimless version had a case 2 1/4" in length. Was looking through the catalogue in poor light and the old eyes didn't spot the difference.

I have several double rifles, Westley Richards, Hollis, Cogswell & Harrison, and others, originally chambered for the .375 2 1/2", some regulated for the 270 grain bullet, and some regulated for the 300 grain bullet. I have handloaded and shot them all for many years.
