Great but somewhat underrated big bore cartridges
      #236409 - 05/10/13 07:25 AM

What are your thoughts on rimmed or rimless cartridges that are more or less omitted?

For instance:
375 H&H Flanged (good round for single shot rifle; suitable for any African plains game and equally fine for double rifles e.g. for driven hunts)

400 H&H (well thought cartridge for DGR without undue recoil; enables very smooth feeding)

450 Rigby (the alternative to 458 Lott; the case is capable of more…)

500/416 NE – surprisingly flat shooting rimmed round for a single shot or double rifle intended for DG

All of them are great cartridges. Here is my opinion.

375 H&H Flanged
Great round that lost out to the 9.3 x 74R due to ammo
and brass unavailability as well as the fact that the
Euros liked the 9.3 and of course this was always available
and does the same job. So in the end, the market trumped nostalgia in numbers but their will always be a following
for the 375 H&H Flanged.

400 H&H. Too proprietary to take off.

450 Rigby. Too many other alternatives already out there
to take off and unlikely tobe taken up by the major manufaturers, especially now the 404, 416 and 500J and 505 Gibbs are available in Factory CZ's and other guns.

500/416 NE
I was always surprised this didn't take off.

The 450 Rigby is available from CZ as a factory chambering in their CZ 550 Safari Magnum Custom.

375 flanged great cartridge and now there is a 375 V-C rimmed. 375 Flanged is perfect for a double to go just about anywhere.

400 H&H, to many other alternatives already established on the market. 416 Rigby would be my choice.

500/416 is a great cartridge, basically 416 Rigby performance but rimmed - lots of penetration.

450 Rigby rimless is a great design but hard to work up reduced loads for if you like to use it for pigs or bear if Scandinavia.

505 Gibbs has the history etc. but sales of ammo shows 500 Jeffery is more popular today and outsells the 505. 505 Got a very limited range of components to choose from as well.
