Belted Rigby case

I've been stirring the pot, about buying a set of case forming dies. I want to put a belt onto the Rigby case. I want to use this in a L.H. Rem. M 700 that's a 338 RUM at present. I think using the Weatherby belted case will force me to butcher my receiver. But swaging a belt into the Rigby case, would make it's swaged down body very close to the .550" UltraMag's diameter.

Has anyone done this? My goal is to make up a belted rimless express cartridge, in one of the fifty caliber variations. It would fall in between the rimmed Uberti 50-95 and the WWG 50 Alaskan. I want to get off follow up shots quicker than I can with my right handed M-98 .416 Wildcat rifle. So it can't kick too hard. I want a short case that I can load to 95% density, and still have manageable recoil, with a heavy for caliber bullet. This bullet can't shrink, and should plow right on through any West Cape Animal, including a bull Eland. Obviously a Cape Buffalo is a different story.

Hunting in a High Rack, and shooting left handed, means you have to keep your two rifles with empty chambers, and un-cocked, as your P.H. has to climb up the side ladder, looking straight down both muzzles. My light rifle is a L H Ruger MKII in 270. But I took Federal ammo with 110 Barnes, and so my P.H. wouldn't let me shoot anything bigger than about 150 lbs. with it. But it was a lot quicker, to bring to bear, shooting left handed.

I think you might be getting yourself in trouble, financially.... But, I would look for an action that comes in .338 Lapua, and base my wildcat on that case. The .338 Lapua is a reinforced (thicker web) .416 Rigby case. The Rem 700 Action is a pushfeed type and, like your 110 grain bullets, commonly not completely sanctioned by PH's for dangerous game.... If you do not intend to go after DG and like the 700 action, you might check out HS precision actions. There are other Rem 700 knock offs that can accomodate the larger base cartriges too.

Isn't the 460 Weatherby case a belted Rigby ? Would have to check the dimensions. Might save a lot of effort.

Yes virtually identical, Jack O'Connor and Fred Huntington used to turn the belts off the 460 WM cases and load them for their 416 Rigbys.

It seems the idea in this post is to end up with a case slightly swaged down from the 416 or 460 parent case. Not sure what that achieves as the end result will still be so close to the parent case that any changes to the action to accommodate anything resembling a 416 will be the same?

Why don't you just get a LH control round feed .416???? You are spending time, effort and $$ to go hunting? Save yourself the hastle, get a LH Winchester 70 Classic in .375 or a Granite Mountain LH magnum action and make a proper (for you) .416. Going with the Win action rebarreled to .416 Remington Mag would be the most cost effective. But you will pay up for a LH .375 classic as I don't think they have made any in magnum length since Winchester shuttered their Ct manufacturing. For the .500 cal, Granite Mtn chambers the 500 jeffery that could be loaded to 2,150 FPS and meet your demands.

Easier to neck cases down than pushing on a
real extreme belt and do it with our 585HE case
with a .653" belt, a .634" base and
as long as any length you'd need up to 3.27" long..

We are getting run made this summer, join in and
get some by helping to get run made. $3 each
shipping included when they are done.
I suggested a $500 deal which gets you 167 cases.
I'm getting whole bunch to fill small orders,
for reloading,for loaded rounds, and for collectors.Ed

If you arent stuck on 50 cal how about rebarreling another Ruger to 450 Marlin.
It would meet your other criteria ,in a std lenght action there would be lots of
room for 500+ grain bullets.
