Looks like a good functional .458.

The walnut isn't bad either.

the gun started out as ,,i have an action what do i do??? so a friend in idaho had a 458 barrel so i say ok ,,,took the bolt over to a local friend ,we bent the bolt handle to my specs, sent a scetch to jasper rayburn for the rear site base and it also has an integral recoil lug ,,the wisner front site (if i remember correctly)was shaped by me,as well as opening up the magazine rails ,,i did the final shaping of the stock ,designed the front and rear sling eyes (which were built by roger green)he also made sure that the feeding was ok seeing that i tried to make it work myself ,,the stock was inletted by bruce russell i put the recoil pad on myself that i got from griffin &howe,,i put the finish on it which is behlen oil stain with about 15 coats of varnish mixed with mcloskeys drier so i could hand rub it ,,,,back then i done a lot of experimenting with finishes,,roger green sent it to a women to checker it ,i cant recall who she was ,,,by all means this was not a dream gun it was just a way to use the action.......paul

Paul,
Looks great, is Jasper Rayburn still in business ? He did metal work on my military 98 action back in the 80's and his work was sharp and crisp. Last I heard he gave up metalsmithing and was farming in Oklahoma.

i dont know i havent had a custom gun built in 20 years and unless i have joel dorleac build me one i may never again,,but i do remember jasper was kinda new on the scene back then and his prices reflected that,, a great guy to work with and he built it once and correct the first time,,,i might add that the little bit of stippling and engraving for numbers was done by a fella in springfield ,mass who worked at smith and wesson for years,,, forgot his name

Paul,

That is a lovely rifle, my friend! Absolutely classy lines and the wood is lovely too!

Thank you for sharing pics. The lines on your rifle give me some ideas of what to do with a couple of actions that I have at the moment.

Good hunting, my friend!

I must make the trip to France soon. Work and other issues have kept me from traveling to Europe. And, of course, the Europe trip will involve a trip to Joel's shop. I just don't know what I will be requesting from him yet.

Good hunting, my friend!
