404 Jeffery
      #208789 - 23/05/12 08:17 AM

Hi
I am looking into a 404J that was supposed to be made by E J Churchill for the 20th Anniversary of Interarms in 1973. A One in One Thousand gun although only 100 were apparently made. The E J Churchill name is on the barrel.

The gun in question does not have a couple of the standard features of that gun from what I can tell by searches on the internet eg. does not have swivel buttplate with cartridge trap or grip trap. Also, 404 was not one of the standard calibres offered. So it was potentially a custom.

The internet does not have much information so I would be interested in anything that anyone knows about the gun. Also I do not have ready access to the Blue Book gun values so if someone does and can tell me some suggested values it would be appreciated.
Thanks
Rick

Homer
Thanks for that.
Strangely enough at the Brisbane BGRC shoot last Sunday one of the guys turned up with his Churchill 404J. Roughly the same as the one I mentioned above except the stock was lighter.
Having now heard of/seen 2 of these I don't think that it is the Interarms 404 that the seller reckons it is - not that this is a problem. I assume Churchill made a number of these over the years. The one I was originally looking at is 2 hours south of Brisbane which is either a coincidence or there are a few of them out there.
Regards
Rick

375Brno, I have the 29th edition here, EJ Churchill "one of One Thousand" rifle here, no mention of .404 calibre !, .375 or .458 so I guess it is not waht it claims to be. if you want the estimate on the .375 or .458 let me know, 29th edition is 2008 fyi, best,
Mike

Hi Paul
No particular engraving. It has the makers name and address (Churchill Bury Street) and calibre both on top of the barrel. Also has serial number on trigger guard and last 3 digits of serial number on bolt.

Hi Mike
Yes I would appreciate the blue book prices if you have them. I think there was a markup on the 375 and 458 and I am guessing that this might be because of the magnum length action.

Rick

Lovely rifle and no need for a magnum action for this great round.

The Parker-Hale African Magnums model 1100M had straighter bolt handles like this:-

They also have a lug brazed to the barrel that is glass bedded to the fore stock and there is a screw under the fore stock that screws into the lug.

1984 vintage .458 Win Mag P-H 1100M. The magazine and floor plate are true magnum length and happily accept loaded .375 H&H rounds. Not sure who's action they used on this.

Parker-Hale also weighted the stock in the fore stock and under the butt pad.

To think I passed one of these up, at a very reasonable price, in my miss spent youth.

That's the truth!!!!!!!!!I've owned a number of PH rifles, always good working, bullet proof Mausers.

I even had a take-off TX1200 .308 barrel on my thumb-hole match rifle in the mid 70's - amazingly accurate with 168 MK's and 41.5gr. IMR48905 - the typical load. I made Master Class in my first shoot with that rifle, then won the Master class on the next 3 targets. Shot many 10X prone scores with it. A wonderful rifle; I cannot remember what I did with it - probalby sold it to a friend so I could 'work' on another. I just don't remember, but that is my typical story.

There are no flies on Parker Hale rifles.
