The .375/06 photos
      #169667 - 16/10/10 08:49 AM

As I promised, the photos of the .375/06. Well, okay. Just the cartridge this time. I'll do the rifle up this weekend.

Pictured is the parent cartridge, the venerable .06, on the left. The fireformed .375 case is to the right of the .06 case. The loaded .375/06 cartridge prior to fireforming is next - this one loaded with 60 grains of IMR 4320 and a 235 grain Speer, which I have settled on as my "light" bullet, the Nosler 260 grain partition for hairy heavyweights. For comparison, on the far right is a cast-bullet loaded .45/70 cartridge.

Sorry about the scope in the background, but it was being used to weight down the paper I was photographing the cartriges against, because the background was otherwise too cluttered.

I've settled on this .375 wildcat as my go to hunting cartridge. A tip of the hat to my mentor and good friend Daryl S.

Thanks for looking in.

To compliment Gord's pictures, this is the full run on how I form brass.
The first is the '06,

second is an '06 necked up straight,

third is the necked up case then necked down to hold a .375 bullet by adjusting the FL die to properly place the shoulder in the correct location for a crush fit upon chambering.

fourth is a fireformed formed case,

fifth and sixth are .375/06Improved loaded rounds - 5/.- 270 TSX and 6/.- 300gr. Hornady RN300gr.

Daryl,

What steps do you take to open the .30-06 case to straight walls?

* New brass or once fired?
* Do you anneal first?
* Do you neck up in stages?
* What expanders do you use?

Thanks,
Curl

Works best with new or once fired brass, Curl. I do it in one pass- with STOS or other lube inside the necks. I have 2 dies for doing this, one takes them to .420", the other to .410". If running .270's or .30's up straight,I have to use the smaller pointed one, while the more blunt plug will do .35Whelen brass. When making brass for my new .375/06IMP, I gathered up all my '06 brass, mostly RP and Fed, some WW, and ran them over the pointier plunger. I lost 8 cases in over 150 pieces of brass- easily worth while, due to the brass having been fired anywhere from once, to 8 times. Most of the older brass in RP brand survived. Although some guys swear at RP brand, I've come to like it in many calibres. WW has the greatest capacity, while RP and FEd are about the same and in this ctg. are interchangable, load wise. They have 78gr. water capacity, compared to about 80gr. or 81.0gr. for WW. Note the 2 1/2" magnums have something like 85/86gr. capacity. Our .375's have a .460" shoulder compared with most IMP .06's having a .454" shoulder. Note also, I am using the same loads in this rifle that I used in my first .375/06IMP and 9.3x62, both of which have .454" shoulders. What wonderful rounds!!!!!!!!!!!!

should have noted - the die body on the left is a 44mag or other expander die- maybe .45/70 - they're all the same, except for length. The 'plug' is a .45/70 RCBS plug, tapered to go into .35 Whelen or larger cases.

The die body on the right is a shortened .300 Win Mag. that I bored for neck sizing 9.3x62's- perhaps 30 years ago. I turned the plug for it out of mild steel, threading 10/32 or 8/32 for a normal RCBS decap stem. Either plug works well.

Daryl's process here is just about identical to what I use making 9.3x62 hulls from .30-06 brass {new} except that the x62 requires trimming a good chunk off. Actually, I just expand to .375 and slow-size till the bolt closes HARD and shoot with my regular load. They do NOT hit same POI. Daryl has to go a bit bigger for the .375 case.

Sarg from NZ runs the .375-06 too.
I wonder what powders and brass he runs.

What rates of twist, bullet weights, velocities, and accuracy are you guys getting with the 375?

Cheers

Sorry Tinker , Im running 338/06 in Weatherby Ultra Light 5 3/4Lbs of power , which is great too , better if you are hunting game from Red stag down & at long range with 160Gr-185Gr , but can still use 275Gr & 300Gr at useable speeds , if not I would be using 9.3X62 or 375/06 as well .

Remember I got the 338 Swift 250Gr & 275Gr A frames off you ?

I hope things are going well for you in the new spot !

Tinker and anyone else interested - the first thing to do is to google .375 Hawk Scovill. The ballistics and load info is just about straight transferable to the .375/06IMP and the 9.3x62 as well- start below max loads listed- always.

I say 'just about' as some guns use more powder than others to reach maximim pressure levels and one should always start low and work as pressure signs indicate.

When I used the googled .375 Scovill data, I achieved just about identical results with many of the loads, yet higher speeds with some and some lower - as you'd expect.

I didn't chronograph my first .375/06IMP which had normal case sizing - virtually idential to a 9.3x62, except for the shoulder angle. The loads I was able to use in that rifle seem way too high, so I haven't gotten around to working in those same powders, ie: 748, N201, 3031 and 760. I will note right now, that my max with 760 in THAT rifle, with a 350gr. Barnes, was 60.0gr. of 748 and 68.0gr. of W760. Do NOT use those loads - please. As I said, some rifles are annomolies.

My new .375/06IMP has the same chamber as Gord's - the .460" shoulder and .470" web for .005" taper per side,, compared to a normal .454" shoulder and .469" web for 7.5 thou taper per side.

Gord's FF loads (soft)
IMR4320 in all.
220gr. Hornady - 60.0gr. - 2,695fps
235gr. Speer---- 60.0gr. - 2,692fps
270gr. Hornady - 57.0gr. - 2,480fps
300gr. Horn. RN- 54.0gr. - 2,320fps

I use full power loads for forming brass. The above loads work well for forming, but are not full power loads for this amazing ctg.

Chrno-tests w/BR2 primers 30/06RP and FED brass
285gr. Speer GS - --57.0gr.H4895 - 2,560fps- near max.- 1 1/2"
250 Sierra BT - ----59.0gr.H4895 - 2,710fps- moderate - 3/4"
225gr. Hornady SP --62.0gr.H4895 - 2,864fps-about max - cloverleafs
235gr. Speer SP ----62.0gr.H4895 - 2,845fps-about max - cloverleafs
300gr. HornadyRN&Interbond--56.0gr.H4895 - 2,470fps-about max - 1" to 1 1/2"

BR2 -300gr. Interbond - 56.0gr. Varget - 2,420fps not max 1"
""" -250gr. Sierra BT - 55.5gr. H4895 - 2,455fps - soft and accurate .650" - 6 shot group (was going to fire 2, 3 shot groups but had a single hole for 3 only so kept going. Probably a good deer load with this soft bullet.

2 more - softer loads in RP 35 Whelen brass
225gr. Hornady SP - 55.0gr. H4895 - 2,450fps - 7/8"
286gr. Speer GS --- 56.0gr. H4895 - 2,415fps - 1 1/2"

.35 Whelen Brass: probably BR2
:300gr. HornadyRN - 54.0gr. H4895 - 2,354fps - 1/2" cloverleaf
:300gr. HornadyRN - 54.0gr. RE#15 - 2,250fps - 1"
:285gr. Speer GS -- 64.0gr. BLC2 - 2,514fps
same load in RP '06 brass went 2,545fps
:270gr. Barnes TSX- 55.0gr. BenchMark - 2,530fps 1 1/2"
CCI250 primers
:270gr. Barnes TSX- 63.0gr. BLC2 - 2,650fps - cloverleafs RP & Fed '06 brass
:270gr. Barnes TSX- 65.0gr. BLC2 - 2,750fps - .825" & .400" RP %& Fed '06 brass

Whelen .35 brass for 300gr. loads below CCI250
:300gr. Hornady RN - 60.0gr. BLC2 - 2,385fps - 1"
:300gr. Sierra BT - 60.0gr. BLC2 - 2,470fps - 1"
:300gr. Hornady BT - 60.0gr. BLC2 - 2,470fps - 1"
:300gr. Norma RN---- 60.0gr. BLC2 - 2,470fps - 1 1/2"

Some were fireforming, some in formed brass - I see very virtually no difference in accuracy and velocity when shooting the heavier, 270 and 300gr. bullets in this ctg, as long as the powder will fit in a non-fireformed case.

Note that my barrel is 26" long, guys.

Note also the BLC2 loads for the 270gr.TSX are less than what I use in my 9.3x62 with 270gr. Speers. That rifle takes up to 68.0gr. BLC2 with those Speers for a speed of only 2,675fps. I settled on a load of 66gr. in it for an even 2,600fps.

Incidently, I recently chrnographed a BRNO ZKK 602 in .375H&H with factory WW 300gr. ST's at 2,472fps. Makes the little blown out '06 case look pretty good, A. One further point, after firing my first TSX with the max load of BLC2 @ 2,750fps, I said to the BRNO owner, watch this. I fired another when gave a reading of 2,474fps, then lifted the bolt of the MK10 Mauser with my little finger and extracted the case. I think if the extractor was removed, the bolt withdrawn, and the butt thumped on the table, the case would fall from the chamber. I did that test with a 26" .257 AckImp running 120's at 3,290fps - the case fell from the chamber of it's own weight. I LIKE AckIMP cases. One must be careful as the brass doesn't show stickiness with hot loads. The primer pockets will loosen before you get hard bolt lift.

1912 ballistics for the .375H&H ie: the ballistics that made the round famous virtually instantly, in Africa, ran a 300gr. at 2,400fps and a 270gr. at 2,600fps. Again, the little '06 case looks pretty good.
Of course, the ballistics that made the 9.3x62 popular in Africa was a soft or solid 286gr. at 2,175fps
