.458WM, .404J or .416 Rigby ?
      #161306 - 02/06/10 03:40 PM

I'm planning my next project rifle. I've just fired a CZ .416 Rigby and loved it.

I can access quite cheap Zastava 458WM or the longer actioned 375H&H Rifles. (ie: Remington 798). I use Lothar Walther pre-chambered barrels and have a Richards Microfit Brown on Brown Laminated stock to suit.

I will be hunting Buff and larger plains game. Which calibre and action should I choose ?

Definitely 404Jeffery. Easier recoil than 416, hits just as hard on the game you will be after. Just don't feel comfortable with the 458 re performance and feeding; I know some will say that these aren't worries these days, but for peace of mind....

I love the 404j of coarse but I think the 416 Taylor is under rated.

I'm no good, as I can't offer objective advice. But I do enjoy my .416 Rigby. Although, after a few years of service, it (CZ550) developed some feeding problems, which I will hopefully get sorted-out when next I visit the city.

All these calibres are sound reliable cartridges for the job intended. After several trips to Africa with a 416 Rigby I am impressed by the versatility of the 416 . On recent trips for plains game and the first shot into Buffalo I load the 400 Barnes TSX sighted dead on at 100 yds for use up two hundred yards.
I then load 300 grn Barnes TSX which shoot exactly 5 inches high at 100 yds and is dead on at 265 yds ( It does away with hold-over uncertainty created when using generally lower top end magnification scopes used on big calibres). As you usually have the advantage on a longer range animal this allows time to change the round. For Elephant I shoot the new Nosler solids which are extemely accurate but importantly they shoot in the exact spot where the Barnes 400grns shoot at 100 yds where the Barnes solids tend to shoot about 1 1/2 - 2 inches to the left .Good enough but sometimes you need that spot on accuracey.

With the hassles of permits and excess baggage costs it helps to add versatility to your rifle by experimenting in this way for a successful hunt.

In Namibia last year my Mountain Zebra , Red Hartebeest and Gemsbok were shot at ranges between 249-293yds so the work on the 300grn loads paid off but then I hopped on a plane to Zim and shot a bull elephant at 40 yds with the Nosler solid without having any resighting task .

To this end I would favour the 375 or the 416 Rigby - Whatever you choose just go and enjoy !!

Cheers

Huntersheart.

Why did you have to bring rational thinking to the subject ?.

Its all suppost to be about "passion" and arguments.

Can't you ream the rifle to accept .458 lott? Thats what I would do. I had one in .458 lott that had been reamed at the factory. "lott" was engraved after the caliber designation; obviously after manufacture.

I enjoy my .458 LOTT. I sold my .404J ad .416 Rigby. The Lott is a very versatile round when really explored. The variety of bullet weights and the use of cases, either Win Mag or Lott become endless.
I load 300 to 600 grain bullets in jacketed and cast, including paper-patched,to what ever game I desire to play. All feed well, components readily available and I like the rifle package(Ruger).

If you are talking about dual use in Africa then the 416 Rigby is-as far as I can tell- as low at 400 as the Lott at 300. Now if you want a good 458 cal what is wrong with the 450Rigby?

Being a poor man (the claim was good enough for Taylor and Keith and is more applicable to me), I try to find my guns second-hand. And, as with the colour of s/h cars, it's best not to be too prescriptive, so I let luck take a hand.

But since you're building your own, Tophet1, I'd select the calibre that feeds best from the action you prefer. I like the FN look of the Zastavas but have heard some doubt their quality. Are they reliable enough for dangerous game? Are you practised enough with long actions to risk
African shortstroke or should you go with the short-action 458 Win?

404. EOS. In other spheres a 300gn at 2600 was the ne plus ultra for mountain and soft skinned game.

Thank you everyone for your input. However I've bit the bullet and changed my Zastava order to one for a Ruger CZ in .416 Rigby at a very good price from HPGS.

It is always cheaper in the long run to buy the factory product and with a bit of gunsmithing the CZ will look and perform as I wish.

Here is a Video of my 16yo son and myself shooting a mates .416 Rigby. They tried to trick him into a flinch by empty loading the rifle for his first shot. They failed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZbkL2eBZBA

The smile on his face was priceless.

I also failed by dropping the rifle from my shoulder to reload.

Both Tophet and Tophet jnr handle the Rigby well.http://forums.nitroexpress.com/images/icons/cool.gif No sign of short stroking. We had the shoulder pad on Tophet jnr as I was not sure how he would handle the recoil and part of the reason for the dummy 1st round.

The loads were 104grains of AR2213SC behind a 410 grain Bertram SP, muzzle velocity is 2430fps. The CZ has a NECG peep on the back and a red fibre optic front bead. My eyes find it a bit hard to pick up the factory bead quickly.

Recknagel make stuff for NECG ... a query regarding the leaf sight on the Boddington No1s to NECG, was forwarded to Recknagel which was then responded upon by the Australian agent for them.

By the way ... I'd rebarrel that CZ 416Rigby to 500ASquare and really have some fun.
