4-bore cases from 20mm cases? How to?
      #141114 - 25/08/09 02:01 PM

How is this done?
I read on here somewhere that it was done, but if someone could give me the run-down on exactly "how", I think I'll take a shot at it. Not for any particular gun yet, but am just extremely interested, and may make some conversation pieces. Later on, maybe I'll build a 4-bore "around" it. But,---got to get started somewhere, huh?
Thank's.

p.s.--thought about putting this in the bore-gun forum, but I saw the reference to them in this one.

Check the 12 gauge from hell thread. Pics are there, but not sure if the process is explained. The last page or close to it. If not explained in the thread, I'm sure the thread originator can explain it via PM for you.

The guy making a 1" bore gun told me that the 20mm brass only works for that diameter, not those with the.938" bore size (which typically use a plastic or paper case). For 1" bore guns, he suggested going to Rocky Mountain Cartridge company.

I was unfamiliar with them and had to go googling - http://www.rockymountaincartridge.com/

Ed here- It takes a bit of work and they only are
good to make the 1" bore ones that match the Owen's doubles
that he had Rocky Mtn make for him. First I turned the base
down to 1.093", then swaged the sides from base to shoulder
straight. Then expanded the neck to 1" id. Between every swaging
and expanding I had to anneal top half the cases. Took 3 swages
and 3 expanders. I left rim same diameter as it is.
RMC can make cases for about 20 bucks each. I had to improve compound
linkage leverage on the ammomaster to do this.Ed

Thank's Ed.
Those measurements will come in handy.
What I'm thinking about now, is a smoothbore 1" gun for use within 25-50 yds. with hardened ball, so if they only work for 1" then that's exactly what I'm looking to do in the future. Not the smaller sizes. Since 'if' I ever start on such a project, (I'm swamped with business right now) it will be a true 1".
I can do the swaging and turning down, so I'll give it a whirl, and keep annealing.
Ever so often I get the blackpowder bug, and if I ever get to this project, maybe I can cure it, especially with 12 drams!!!
I've got a 10-bore Tolley bird gun here that I'm thinking of "scaling up".
But, like I say, thats if I ever get to it, but right now, I'm going to play with making some cases.
Thank's!

p.s.-reason I'm going to use the 20mm cases is because of availability---I could go with RMC, but who knows what will happen down the road?---and 20mm cases will always be found somewhere, because of military use. I'm just thinking 'long term'.
But, RMC stuff is great though, and I'd use them for any other size.

Keep in mind that "new" 20MM cases are usually steel, so if you find brass buy as many as you can pay for. if it's even possible to re form steel cases I'm sure it's a lot more work. That was one problem with the .950 JDJ-they started making cases out of 20MM Vulcan brass, then Vulcan cases started being made out of steel.

Of course, the fact that recoil from a 100 pound rifle was knocking some shooters unconscious was a factor as well.

Yes, thank's.
I've got a source for the brass ones right now.
I can't even imagine doing this with steel ones, not to mention, in my opinion it's just not "right".hehe
I can't stand steel cases.
I'm going to stock up on these brass ones, but, for obvious reasons, a lifetime supply of 4-bore cases is kind of low in number.hehe
If I shot it too much I might end up like Selous was.hehe

You can't straighten the sides of steel ones without
galling up the dies and it would take a
hydraulic press anyway. And expanding necks
would split them. If you get 50 cases
they'd last a long lifetime. Ed
