Affordable Big Bores

I paid around $1400 dollars for my 375 H&H,with the scope and rings. That is the kind of guns that I can afford. (or less!) I was looking online at the Holland & Hollands, HOLLY POOP!!!! $190,000 THOUSAND FOR A STINKING GUN!!! Thats almost what I paid for my house. Is CZ the only affordable ones, or are there others? What other affordable brands do you guys reccomend?

Ruger African/Alaskan in 375 Ruger for under $1000. Some pre-64 Winchesters show up now and again ... All can be had for under $1400 if you're patient.

the new remington 'mauser action' look pretty good in pictures. never handled one though. MSRP is around 1100 US.

The NEW remington Mauser is a Mark X and has been around for years and was average at best when it was a Mark X - and Remington are likely to cut as many corners as possible in production costs.

You can get a new Ruger Alaskan in 375 Ruger for $725 + shipping. Check Gunbroker and Auction Arms websites.

I bought a cherry lightly used Win Mdl 70 375H&H for less than $900 recently in a small local gunshop mainly because I'm in the South and its not a "deer" rifle.

I was grinnin on that one!!

Those guns are out there. You gotta just keep lookin!!

Was just pokin around on gunbroker--
possible good deal on a 458 Win Mag on the cheap--

A custom FN mauser with a custom shilen barrel in 458 for $650-looks like a decent gun but you always take your chances with reworked actions, etc--

If you are looking to hunt something local in Colorado I am doing some spring cleaning!!

Not a big bore but I have a stainless steel all Weather Ruger MKII with open sights in 338 Win Mag in fine shape that I will let go for $500--a good elk/moose gun for anything that walks up there!! Not pretty with the ugly synthetic stock but it will get the job done!!

I just took delivery of one in 458 for $682.00 and it is about equal to the Alaskan MK X. I has a stupid folding rear sight that has to go, but it is pretty good otherwise. It shoots tight, now that I cleaned up the trigger, which is the same adjustable one as on the MK X and Whitworth. I can't warm up to the laminated stock.

I stuck a 1-4 Leupold in Leupold QD mounts on it, and will drop it into a Whitworth type stock I have here. Its a nucleus for a decent big bore and works just fine, as-is...for under $700.00 new.

Remember, we are talking about affordable big bore rifles, not snob rifles.

I recently bought this Savage FSS116 WW in 375 H&H with a new 1.5-6 4200 Elite in Warne QD rings for $750.00, shipped. I'll be using it for a Roosevelt elk hunt along the Oregon coast in November. It cuts a ragged hole; the Rainguard scope feature works; the gun comes in at 8 pounds-scoped for easy carry in the thick rainforest and straight up & down terrain we'll be hunting. I can't see lugging my pre 64 Mdl 70 375 or FN/Sako 375 Wby into this kind of country, and the Savage works perfectly...feeds slick and has their version of CRF. The Accu Trigger does work!












The action is plenty long and has room to use 350-380gr bullets seated out a bit.

Thanks, but I just saw the Cabelas deal on the 5 Winchesters and was all excited about buying them, until I realized they were $35,000 and not $3,500. I thought what a great deal, only 700 a gun, boy was I a retard. I have a CZ 375 H&H, 300RUM, Ruger 30.06, and a Remington .270. I was just thinking of getting a bigger gun like a 416 or a 458 Lott in the future.

I've been researching inexpensive big bores for some magazine articles and really, a person can do quite well by diligently following the online gun auctions. I've bought and sold a bunch and I believe a person can do very well. I've had a couple of CZ's in .458 Lott and .458 Win Mag. They can stand some polish and glassing but they are good solid rifles. I had a .376 Steyr for a while. The cartridge was great but I didn't care for the rifle. I still have an identical Savage 375 H&H to the one above (even down to the scope and mounts) and it is the most accurate rifle of the bunch. It has a lot of plastic parts but it is a solid gun. I bought and sold a number of Mauser conversions to .458 but you have to be careful because a lot of them are not well done by people who don't really know their stuff. Fine for most hunting but not for dangerous game dependability. I ended up with a heavily customized .458 Win Mag Ruger 77. Someone had spent a pile of money on it and never cycled a shell afterward. I bought that gun for less than $700... but I also should add that I had a standard early model Ruger 77 that misfed shells and the standard open sights are a joke. I now have a Ruger .375 African and I like the rifle a lot in spite of pretty stiff recoil... but it will work for me in Africa with the older .458 for backup. Just the other day I walked into a local gun shop and the guy had a nice Browning .375 H&H on a Mauser action for leas than $800. It had some tiny bugers but by and large it was a real decent rifle. The thing is that guys will buy big bore rifles, shoot them a few times or go on a single hunt then all they can think of is getting rid of them because they don't like the recoil or they simply will not use them again. I believe these are the rifles to go after because a lot of dealers won't put much trade in them because they are slow movers. I paid less than $800 a piece for all of these rifles. Most hovered around $600 - $700 and a few Mauser conversions went for as low as $450 although I usually ended up with a couple of hundred more in them trying to update them.

I've got a Ruger 77 in 458 Lott that just took a Cape Buffalo in Botswana. It's got a Leupold 1.5-4 on it and is Mag-Na-Ported. Shoots a ragged hole at 50 yards and dropped my buf at 65. I won't be going back to Africa again, so I might just sell it. I've got over $2,000 in it - gun $1500; scope $400, mag port $150. Recoil off hand isn't bad. Plus I have two boxes of ammo, one solid, one SP. I'll part with all for $1500 - no less.

Keep a watch on some of the auctions--its tax time and many just want to get rid of the BIg Bores cause they hate shooting them--

As stated--These can be very accurate rifles indeed!!

When was the least time you looked at one with the barrel shot out?? or the Bluing worn off??
