Primers for H4350

I am about to begin reloading .375 H&H using 235 - 300 grain bullets. I have purchased H4350 as the powder of choice for my 300 grain SP and solids. I have a question on what primer to use with this powder. I currently only have Winchester primers and for some reason think I am supposed to be using a Federal model primer with this particular cartridge. Again, .375 H&H Magnum (belted) not a .375 Winchestor or .375 Remington cartridge, but the classis .375 H&H Mag. Should it be the 215?

It's not a question of the sort of powder you are using. A case the size of the .375 H&H demands the use of a magnum primer to assure proper ignition.

My handloads with H4350 (and I use tons of it) use standard large rifle primers. Federal and Winchester primers both work well. H4350 is relatively fast as powders for large cases go, but the 375 H&H is on the small side of large (compare max loads to 378 Wby and you'll see what I mean). My handloads with Hornady 300 gr softpoints are amazingly accurate with top notch velocity, using standard primers and H4350 (in a Ruger #1). If you load powders slower than H4350, then magnum primers may be needed, but H4350 responds well to standard primers.

With H4350, either type will work, though over the years I've settled on magnum primers exclusively due to the fact that from time to time I shoot in very cold weather and more-or-less want the added insurance of a hot spark.

Rule of thumb!

Big case, Magnum primer!

Standard primers may be fine, but with magnum primers you're sure of the best result!

If I ever question Mag or stanard I look it up in a load book. Most rifles use Large Rifle or Magnum
Primers.

Ordinary CCI 250's work just fine in the .375. I even use them with 4064 and 4895 in that case, as well as the .375/06IMP.
: The ballistics are virtually identical in the smaller case and the larger case works better with the mag primers. There is no need for the Fed 215's although they'll do just fine with the slower vburning stick powders, and ball powders as well.
; If ever going hunting in colder climates, you will need the extra burning time of the magnum primer to ignite slow burning powders.
; Normal primers, for me, don't cut it when using powder charges over 65gr.

In my .375 I use the Federal 215M & I don't have any complaints about the performance. My recommendation would be to try it first and if you cannot get good groups try a different primer. You might even try a regular LR primer. The rule of thumb is: big case = mag primer but there are some exceptions.

Daryl and others,

I am a big fan of the CCI 250, having used it for many years. I basically use it on anything bigger than .30-06.

I'm using the FED 215 in my Nitro Express cartridges: .500 NE; .450 NE; .450/400 NE. My use of this primer began with these cartridges and dates to when I acquired my Merkel .500NE just several years ago.

I haven't tried interchanging the CCI 250's for the Fed 215, or vice-versa. My use of the 215 has been compartmentalized as stated, with the 250 for everything else large.

What do you know about the interchangeability of the 250 and the 215? Is any objective information about their relative performance, or do we just have anectdotal experience? I would like to find that there is no appreciable difference between these primers, so I could standardize on one (the CCI 250).

Do you or anybody have a light you can shine on my ignorance?

And by the way, H4350 is my "go-to" powder. Just love the stuff. It's even good on corn flakes!

I use magnum primers for jacked bullets and standerd primers for cast loads. I would start with a redused charge and work up when changing brands of primers.

Curl- I use Fed 215's mainly in the BP ctg. guns now. I have used them in the .358 Norma and saw no difference betweent hem and the CCI250's. The Feds are supposed to have a longer flash time to better ignite huge powder charges. I know they have delivered slightly better accuracy in the Sharps with black powder for me. As to their use in normal magnum rounds, I doubt they'd show any benefit. When changing primers, one should always reduce the charge a grain or two and test for changes in case had measurement indicating pressure changes.

Over the years, I have settled on the Federal 215s for all my reloading needs for .30 caliber up to .416. They've proven reliable and have never had a misfire, or hangfire going back to the mid 1970s.

You F215 fans might be surprised to learn that the supply of Federal primers has slipped into the maw of the war on terror. As far as I can tell, no Federal primers will be available for the forseeable future. That's one reason for my question above.

Fortunately I was able to find 2000 Fed 215's at a local shop, and they now are mine.

I use Magnum Primers for Magnum rifles. For instance 375 Mag.

You want to use magnum primers.

If you can't find them on the shelves try the gun shows, I'm sure some folks have stock piles
