I would like information on reloading the 416 Rigby. In Taylor's book on African's Rifles he states that the 416 Rigby used 69 grains of powder, 410 grain bullet for 2350 velocity. Is there any modern day powder that uses 69 grains and gets 2350 velocity.

The 2350 was in a 28" pressure barrel though. In a 24" Mauser, real velocity of the Kynoch ammo ran closer to 2250.

No, I don't know of such powder. Cordite is gone. It was a relatively fast burning propellant. Many slower powders will do the job though.

H4831 Imr 4831 RL-22 will get you the velocity and more but not with 69 grains.
Cordite by its nature is different from modern rifle powders and has loading problems of its own anyway.

Regards

I guess I didn't know double-base smokeless rifle powders weren't "modern". Double-base smokeless propellants remain nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine as they've been for 123 years and are just as modern as they ever were. There were no loading problems with it at all. It was simply cut to length and dropped in the case before the case was tapered and necked. It was designed for mass production of munitions, not for handloading.

One of the reasons why I asked this question was of recoil. According to the recoil calulator every 10 grains of powder adds 3 pounds of recoil, so if most modern powders use around 100 grains to get that velocity compared to 69 grains of powder, then that adds around 9 foot pounds of recoil. That would take the recoil from 55 pounds down to 46 pounds of recoil, which would be much more pleasant to shoot.

Alaskan,
I'm not aware of any available powder that will SAFELY give that MV with 69 gr. As pointed out above, Taylor was referring to the Cordite charge.
Probably the closest you can come is with the cordite to RL15 conversion of 1.19. In other words Cord charge x 1.19=theoretical max of RL15. That gives us 82.11 RL15 as an approximation. I've used 85 gr with the 400 A-frame for 2491 f/s (loose) and 2519 (with dacron filler).

For loads that don't need filler I prefer slower powders. I've done quite a bit of chrono work with this cartridge in 3 rifles over the last 15 years. If you can tell us what powder you have available, I can probably provide a load recommendation.
