Speer .375" 270gr. boat tail Spitz-SP bullet?
      #38872 - 08/10/05 01:52 AM

I am hoping someone could share their experience reloading and shooting the Speer .375" 270gr. boat tail Spitz-SP bullet.

I was concerned that the pointed tip of this Speer bullet would get deformed by recoil in the magazine of my rifle (Win. mod70) thus spoiling the accuracy of the
forth shot fired from a fully loaded rifle.

I am looking for a good (great?) general purpose bullet for thin skinned non dangerous game and target practice.

The Speer .375" 285gr. GrandSlam's look strong at the tip with their wide meplat, but I know 99.9% of all my shooting would be at a target range and I can't see wasting expensive premium bullets practising shooting paper.
I think is better to practice with the load you are going to hunt with.
How about bullets with the plastic tip?

I've been shooting the boat tail 270gr SP Speer bullet for a long time. I have never had any problem with the tip getting flatened out or it affecting the accuracy of that bullet. Boat tail bullets fly as boat tail bullets do.

I use this bullet loaded over 70 gr of IMR 4064 and a Federal 215M primer. This is a mid range load. As with any load this may not be safe in you rifle. It is an absolute death ray on antelope and deer. I haven't noticed any deformation. I am satisfied and it is what I will be carrying for elk this year. I tried the Hornady 270 gr SP but was not pleased with the performance I had.

While doing more research on bullets available in .375", I was very suprised to find Speer listing their 270gr. Spitzer BTSP as a varimint bullet.

The URL below takes you to the Speer page that catalogs this bullet as varmint use. I suspect this classification is base on the bullet contstruction being conventional as in the core is not soldered to the jacket as in bonded or hot-core construction. If this bullet is loaded to high velocity it may act like a varmint bullet even though it weighs 270grs. This may limit penetration on biger game like Elk on a quartering shot.
If this bullet was loaded to a lower than max velocity it would probably hold together and just mushroom in the classic fashion with less core and jacket separation.
