I am not sure it is meant to be competing with the .375H&H mag. I thought the 9.3x64 did that. I looked the cartridge up on Sako's web page. In terms of energy level, it appears to be a .358 Norma mag come .338 Win Mag that will work in a standard 30-06 length action.

Since it is a 9.3x62 +4mm - that is the case is the same onle 4mm longer, you can use a standard long action. I am guessing, but I think it was developed to get a bit more velocity out of the 9.3x62, making it more useful ? / attractive to modern shooters.

Your guess is as good as mine. The 9.3x62 has been, and still is, a very fine cartridge which just gets the job done.

sako's website gives 2559 fps MAX muzzle velocity with a 286 gr bullet for their 9.3x66

and for handloaders, with a 286 grain barnes x-bullet and 71.0 gr vihtavuori N560 powder you still only get about 2550 ft/sec in the sako 9.3x66 -- so i never saw the point to that new cartridge:

compare it to the venerable, tried-and-tested 9.3x64 brenneke -- which also has C.O.A.L. 3.37" for springfield-length actions -- and it EASILY gives 2650 ft/sec with various 286 gr bullets.

heck, wolfe's excellent website gives several loads at or over 2750 fps with 286 gr bullets for the 9.3x64 with plain old IMR 4350.......

so what's the point of this new 66 mm cartridge...?

regards

I think the idea was to be able to rechamber existing 9.3x62
rifles without a bolt face change and maintain magazine capacity

aussiemike --

if you go to www.rifleshooter.com, you'll see a button labelled "loaddata", that's the one

if you are not a subscriber, you can only see limited data

an annual sunscription is USD $24.95 -- then you get the full data

they have got tens of thousands of loads!!!

they went back thru old issues of handloader magazine and uploaded data, and they are still expanding the database literally daily

i have subscribed for almost two years and am very pleased with the info available.

if you're shooting expensive premium bullets in larger calibers, they can actually save you money by getting you onto the right powder from Day One of your load development for a new rifle. well.....at least you could tell your wife that.

obviously, an american publisher suich as wolfe does not have nearly as much info on say the 8x68 or the 9.3x74R as they do on the .30-06 (which is well over a thousand loads all by itself)

just for example, they list 139 loads for the 9.3x62 but only 35 for the 9.3x74R and 37 for the 9.3x64 brenneke

they also have lots of info on older cartridges that are no loonger popular, such as about 300 loads for the .250-3000 savage, and another 300 or 400 for the 257 roberts, even a couple hundred loads for the 257 improved, and well over a hundred loads for the .25-20 and the same for the .25-35.

way cool!

oh, by the way, only FOUR loads for the 9.3x66 sako!!!!!

enjoy
