A classic African cartridge...
      #234924 - 31/08/13 07:06 AM

A custom single shot rifle (idealy based on Farquharson or Fraser action) build for that cartridge would be my dream. The looong neck would swallow easily any of the heavy bullets from Woodleigh to North Fork or CEB.
A great penetrator by all means…

Do you recognize the cartridge?

Looks like an unfired 450/400 3 1/4"

Neck looks a bit long but could be an optical illusion
by the angle of the photograph.

Agree.
Thin rim, long neck, must be the 450/400 3-1/4.

The 3" will take any weight bullet available as well and have the added extraction leverage of the thick rim.
I guess the only 3-1/4" chambering I would own would be an original rifle but there is certainly nothing wrong with it.

It is NOT the extraction that is an issue nowadats,
for me it is bloody reloading / resizing where I pull
the rims off cases !!!

Gentlemen it is the 450-400 NE 3,25".

I do not think there is a real difference in ballistics between 3,25" and 3", however I like the older version better.
The 3,25" is an oddity today so you have to be prepared to pay "reasonable" price for it - one here in Europe loaded with 400 gr Woodleigh costs 13 EUR.

I have always wanted to own a big bore single shot that would give with the 400 grain bullet deep, straight line penetration without undue recoil.
I think it would be fun to tackle a moose with it as well as African large plains game such as zebra, eland etc.

I wonder how many of you use the 450-400 NE 3,25" or 3" version.

CZ

I am surprised at what you say about it being an oddity.

Anyone, one of the posters on here used it to take
at least 3 of the big 5 with my old Sidelock in this
calibre.

The gun is currently for sale on Champlin Arms web site.

500 Nitro, as an experienced hunter and previous owner of the double chambered for 450-400 NE 3,25"
what is your experience with it? Which bullets did you use?

I've only shot paper with that calibre
and still own a 450/400 3 1/4".

I doubt it would be any difference to the
3" version. I am in the camp that at the
end of the day, it is a 400gn bullet at say
2150 fps, what cartridge it comes out of
is kind of irrelevant.

I would have used 400gn Woodleigh RN SN
if i had used anything. That was what I
used to sight in the gun.

I like the calibre, I prefer the 3" version
only because it is easier to handle in my
hands but I think the 3.25" cartridge looks
sexier.

But that is just my HO !!!

Edit
The gun I was referring to is the Lancaster Sidelock
- known as the "Wrist breaker" due to it's spring cocking
system that made it harder to close for some.
It's on Champlin Arms web site.

500 Nitro, what bullet diameter do you use? Apparently the longer version was loaded mainly with .408" bullets.
By the way the length of the cartridge plays important role for me because as I have big hands it is sometimes more difficult for me to load 7x57 into the rifle magazine than e.g. 350 Rigby.
