.416 Rigby CZ Safari Classic
      #164945 - 25/07/10 09:18 AM

Well here is my standard CZ550 Safari Classic chambered in .416 Rigby.

I purchased the rifle from HPGS for less than A$1,500. It arrived at AFRO408's play pen prior to my PTA. We both opened it together and checked the bedding. All was good with the correct bearing surfaces abutting wood in the furniture and ample space behind the tang so that no splits would occur there. I have read of CZ bedding horrors so time will tell if all is right with this rifle.

There are two very thin cross bolts in the stock. Neither are 90 deg to the stock but will do the job. There was some slight upward pressure from the forend which I will leave alone at this stage. I will only modify it, if hand load accuracy is unsatisfactory.

For scope mounting I ordered a Recknagel roll off ring set from Graeme Spraggon and A$225 later it arrived at home. It looks quite 'funny' but has the benefit of offsetting the scope to the rear. Being a full magnum length action, any extra latitude in mounting the scope is welcomed. I stole the idea for their use from Tilleyman nya:

When the PTA arrived I went to pick it up and Tony quickly adjusted the set trigger to an initial pull of 3lb. I can still use it set, but never will.

It takes four rounds down in the magazine despite the factory saying it only takes three.
The stock is quite 'chunky' but adds to the weight and the recoil pad is solid rubber and good enough for the job. Feeding and chambering with factory ammo is very smooth and I have used a heavy viscosity 'Tetra' lubricant for the bolt. It is control feed (of Course) and I can't place a round in the chamber and then close the bolt over it. Feeding must come from the magazine.

The only factory ammunition I could get are Hornady 400 grain DGS (Solids). I wanted two boxes so Tamworth Firearms ordered in ten. If you want Hornady .416 Rigby factory solids you will have to go to Tamworth.

I decided that all range testing and load development should be done standing up and luckily my Spotlighting rig allows that to be done with a bean bag placed on top of the platform.

The Express sights on the CZ 550 were placing POI 6" off to the left out to 75 yards. The factory front sight is miniscule so I have ordered a white fluro front replacement sight from Brownells which is 6.5mm high. This is the same height as the factory sight. I will adjust the express sights after it is in place.

I then placed on the Recknagel roll off mounts with custom leupold 1-4x20 scope with #4 reticle.

It took me five rounds to be 2" high at 100 yards. Three rounds into 1.760" wasn't bad I thought for a 4x scope with thick crosshairs. Good enough for me.

Load development will follow as I collect more empty brass. I was starting to feel the recoil after about 7 rounds. At least this will let me get away two, three shot groups while load testing before having to call it quits. :htfu: The recoil certainly is cumulative. I only had on a thin Polo shirt and will wear a thicker coat next time. I cracked off one shot without hearing protection and it is the weirdest sound. A huge 'Whoof' followed by an ear splitting 'Crack'. The rounds sure do motor off down the range.

Load development will follow.

Here are some rounds to compare:

Hi John,

The CZ550's are under rated by a lot of people where in fact they are chosen by a lot of African P.H.'s as you know. It looks like some good times ahead what with the load workup. I know that I am getting anxious for the return of my two but one has to try and be patient, some-thing I find hard to do.

Cheers Mate,

Jeff

It looks higher than it is Neale.

I have a very upright shooting position anyway so don't notice it as much. I'll measure it when I get home tonight.

I measured the height of the centre line (axis) of the scope above the centre line of the bolt. It was approx 2".

LOP is 13 7/8" and I also measured the height from 7" along the top of the comb to the centre line of the scope. This was approx 2 1/2".

I don't know if this is high or not.

Two other rifles I own also had the same 2" height from bolt centre to scope centre.

FN Mauser 98 7x57 with Kahles 3.5-10x50

That dimension must suit me

My FN Mauser 98 9.3x62 with Redfield 3-9x40 was slightly less at 1 7/8"

Nice rifle and a great classic cartridge!

I have a BRNO ZKK 602 in .458 WM and a Ruger Magnum Rifle in .416 Rigby with 1.5-5 Leupold. They are both very good shooters.

I have found the best way for shooting large calibers is from the sitting position with a set of shooting sticks. I'm able to almost achieve benchrest-sized groups.

Enjoy your new rifle!

Thanks John.

As long as it fits you that is the main thing.

I'm off this weekend to shoot the SSAA "Big Game Rifle" for the first time to see what it is all about.I will take the 9.3 and 404 for a look.

450 Ackly and others are going to be there.
Cheers Neale.

I've got their calender and would love to attend but bloody rosters ... (rant)...

I went to one at Inverell (a one off) years ago and it was a hoot.

Nice rifle in a classic caliber. I picked up a Ruger Alaskan 416 recently. Plan to start loading soon!

Very nice piece of kit. I have one with the hogs back stock that suits me very well.

I also find the recoil of full house loads quite.....cumulative. More than 6 gets a bit much, though I can continue a little longer with 340Gr Woodleighs.

Does chew through the powder though - bring me a bigger shovel!

Update.

Today I aligned the express sights with the Hornady factory 400grain DGS's. I have recieved a white dot replacement front sight from Brownells which makes alignement with the rear folding leaves much easier. POI is now spot on at 25 yards. If my eyes deteriorate any furthur I will order up Recknagel aperture and get the higher front sight required. IIRC it needs to be 8.5mm not 6.5mm.

I replaced the scope and there was nil, I'll say again nil, change in POI useing the Recknagel roll off mounts. At 25 yards POI was 1/2" exactly above POA and at 100 yards 1 1/2" above POA.

Hunting Schneider has very kindly loaned me a PAST shooting shoulder pad (man bra). Six rounds of .416 Rigby and 21 rounds of 9.3x62 were much easier to fire off.

I have never tried to get different loads to shoot to the same point of impact before. When I start reloading for the .416 I will be trying to get cast and Woodleigh jacketed soft points to shoot to the same POI as the DGS. I am very happy with the accuracy of the Hornady factory ammo.

My RCBS 350 grain FN mould and 1,000 Hornady Gas Checks also arrived today and I hope to start casting soon.

Hi John,

With regards to the NECG peep site, why not get the Recknagel one that is made for the CZ550.

Gents to clarify this; they are one and the same and are made by NECG. It is cheaper to buy these direct from NECG. If they tell you they do not send to Australia, they do. I bought both mine from them direct.

If you need it I will try and find their contact details that I used.

Cheers
Greg
