Rugers light heavyweight

Fellas, seems like both Hornady and Ruger came out with the much ado round the .416 Ruger in of course a light package. I enjoy watching some of the gun rag authors and there programs on the Outdoor Channel and todays public introduction of the .416 Ruger. Not going to dethrone the .416 Rigby in any yrs. to come surely but........will become quite popular as the weight and 20"bbl. along with a 400 grn pill @ 2400fps should appeal to many who won't or can't buy or let alone afford a nice shooting rig.

I've handled but never shot the .375 Ruger and loved the balance and feel and how easily to me it points. Just did not at the time require a .375 when I have 2 .338 win mags and a 9,3x62 and 9.3x64 currently being built by Satterlee Arms on a 1909 Argie action. I may as well get my hooks into a .416 magnum or Ruger that is.

Figure some here would like to know the latest.

regards,

Cheers for the heads up CJack.

That is going to be an interesting little gun with those dimensions, esp if you are called to do some serious load development with it!

I recently returned from a ten day safari in Zimbabwe and used the .375 ruger to take seven plains game animals from impala to wildebeast. It performed exceptionally well. I have been a long time fan of the M77. I loaded the 300 grain Swift A-Frame at near maximum velocity by the data available. I had one shot kills on three impala, a zebra stallion, warthog, and kudu bull. The wildebeast took two and a finisher. Some of the shots were pushing 175-200 yards. I was quite pleased, as I had been at the range as well. I think the ruger rifle is not only a great value, but possibly the most reliable and well built hunting rifle available. I took a duggaboy and big bull hippo on land with an M77 in .458 lott as well. I have several more M77 rifles in various flavors and will surely have to have a .416 ruger. I saw the episode of Tracks Across Africa yesterday where Steve Hornady whacked the Lion and was quite impressed. I am looking forward to seeing this one hit the retailers.

Had the same show recorded last night when I go home from work...couple of interesting items..

1. The place Steve Hornady shot his lion was the exact blind I shot mine out of 3 weeks later..Ian Gibson who was helping on the hunt and had actually baited the lion was my PH while there for 3 weeks..great guy..Ian is actually flying over to the SCI this Jan and then making a stop up here in Montana for a few days..plan to take him snowmobiling..should be quite an experience for someone from Zim..

2. Last year while at the SCI show in Reno..little blirps were being stated about this coming out..in fact there have been numerous articles with a couple of writers necking up the current cartridge to the .416--all with very good results..one was actually in the monthly SCI mag that comes out last winter by (Terry Weidland ??)..

3. Actually was sitting at breakfast his morning contemplating building a custom on one of my own actions sitting around..think it should be a cool cartridge to mess around with..probably not offering a whole lot more than what is currently available..but fun none the less..

I would think it wouldn't be too long before we see the 416 Ruger. The ballistics should be close or equal to the 416 Rem and the cartridge shorter in a lighter weight rifle.

I'd be real interested except I already have a Gentry 416 Rem synthetic mauser lightweight with a 20" barrel. If they just would have come out with this years ago I could have bought the 416 Ruger instead!!

Found this online.
Does anyone know if Ruger stayed with this design?
http://www.ammo-one.com/416Ruger.html

How in the world can you get a 400gr. at 2400fps in a short case / short barrel? Is the factory loading just super hot?

Huvius,
That cartridge appears to be H&H length ... Ruger's new offerings are shorter. That's actually a damn interesting picture ... beltless, H&H length ... it it a 404Jeff based cartridge or a precursor to Hornady's 375Ruger?? Intriguing.
Cheers...
Con

I agree, not a .375 ruger case based cartridge.

I Agree--

It looks to be a variant of Remingtons ultramag series off the 404 cartridge. No belt and 375 H&H length.

Looks a lot like a 404 based cartridge - which would beg the question - WHY?
404 is a .423" bullet - 416 is a .416" bullet. The only thing going for the 416 version would be better availability of projectiles I guess.
Looks like the rim may be a little more rebated than the 404 - not as much as a 425 Westley or an 11.2X72 Schuler though.

Have a look at 416 Ruger & 416 Rigby & you'll see that the 416 Ruger is basically a re headstamped Rigby round & as such nothing to do with the just released round by the same name.
