Shooting 458 WM in 458 Lott?
      #35045 - 25/07/05 12:35 PM

Can someone tell me if you can shoot the 458 WM shells in a rifle chambered for the 458 Lott.

Someone has told me you can but i was a bit concerned about the extra length of the chambering in the Lott.

If you can, is the accuracy affected?

It would be good if you can as it would be a cheaper option for "plinkering"...

anyway just out of interest

cheers

I'd do that only in an emergency, like no Lott ammo arriving with the rifle. Even though some say it will do no harm, I never do it. Since the 458WM is shorter than the Lott, the Lott chamber is "fire-etched" at the end of the length of the WM brass. Those same say that all you have to do is clean the chamber thoroughly and it should be OK. All you have to do to examine the Lott chamber after a few WM's and you'll see the damage to the chamber. Over time, with enough WM's through the rifle, the Lott brass will flow into the circumferential etched area and you'll have stuck brass.

I have purposely inspected many 458 Lotts in Africa wherein the PH have shot a ton of 458 Win in there guns and can see no visible damage from this practice and I shot a lot of 270 from short 06 cases many years back with no visable signs of throat cutting, at least no more that one would get from a say 7 STW or 300 WBy...so I see it as a viable practice keeping in mind that a 458 Lott is used for dangerous game up close for the most part and bench rest accuracy is not required, at worst a hogged out 458 would still probably shoot better than most double rifles.
