.416 Taylor in the BLR ?

A poster over on AHN has floated the idea of chambering a Magnum-action BLR for the .416 Taylor. Has any-one here tried this, or know of someone who has? Any comments on the practicality of such a venture?

Pros, Cons, Opinions would be welcome.

A few Sambar hunters in Victoria had BAR's (when they were legal!)converted to .458WM - so I imagine a BLR could be similarly converted.

I had a BAR in 338 Win Mag and looked into the .416 conversion. It's very expensive because the barrel has to be custom made.

I see no reason it wouldn't work fine! There might be some tweeking to get it to feed properly, but it doesn't seem insurmaountable! With a fairly heavy barrel, and a very good recoil pad, it should be a real handy rifle.

My good friend and gunsmith altered a 7m.m. magnum to .458 for a customer about ten years ago. As I recall, it was pretty straight forward work until he got to the re-aligning of the idler gears and the lever ratchet. It is all blind work and trial and error to reassemble. The man who ordered it has hunted the larger North American game and been well pleased with it.

I'll be doing one of these for chadd latter in the year... seems to be a great idea for guys thay don't like boltguns.

but, heck, BLR's have a short, sharp boot due to stock geo.

but how about taking one of the new .300WSMs and converting it to .375 or .416? Sounds like a heckuva bear rifle.

other than potential feeding issues, i think it would be a great starting point.. Not certain how a belted mag case would chase a wsm case....

a blr in 300 WIN mag, though, would let you do the 300x416 which would let you have a littleless bolt thrust, though , thinking about it, they run the same pressure in the same casehead.....

Marrakai, I am curious as to whether you have pursued the idea of a BLR in .416 Taylor. It sounds like a good way to get a quick second shot without taking one's eye off the sights. I would think recoil might be unpleasant as most of the Browning rifles are about seven pounds or thereabouts. The 7 mm magnum should be a good starting point as it and the .338 and .458 win mag are all based on the same parent case. The gear linkage (unless there is a secret to the procedure) could be tedious on reassembly. The barreling is pretty straight forward, though. If you proceed, Please do an article on it. By the way, I have enjoyed your postings immensely in the forums, thank you for sharing your experiences. Phil.

I floated this enquiry on behalf of a poster over on AHN, and reported the results of this thread back to him last August. I'm unsure whether he proceeded with the idea, but if I can find the thread again I'll ask the question. Unfortunately, AHN seems to get 're-birthed' every so-often, with complete loss of old threads, so it might not be there. I'll do my best to find out.

Those that know me would be chuckling quietly to themselves at the thought of Marrakai with a big-bore rattle-gun like the BLR!
