Hello to All,

I'm new to the forum and I'm new to big bore hunting.

Why is the 375 H&H still popular as ever but very few would recommend a 338 Lapua Mag? Hunters commonly use as large as 416 Rigby's or 458 Lott but I have rarely heard of anyone using a 338 Lapua Mag or BMG .50 Cal.

I would agree that most 50 cals are too heavy to yomp around but are there other reasons behind this, apart from the fact that 375 H&H rounds are easily available?

I am 'seriously' thinking of getting a 375 H&H but wanted to know your take on using calibers such as 338 Lapua Mags as oppose to 375 H&H.

In addition, since these rifles weigh about the same and they have about the same point blank range, when in fact, the 338 Lapua Mag has greater velocity, why is the 375 H&H being favoured?

In closing, can someone tell me which 375 H&H rifle has a 5 round mag. I have been looking around and they all seem to have 2 or 3 round mags.

I always think it is important to match the calibre to the game.

What are you hunting or planning to hunt?

The CZ550 has a larger magazine.

I am thinking of getting a 'big bore' for buffalos in Aussie. The biggest calibre I have shot (in a range) is a 356 and the recoil felt mild at 2600fps. So, handling it is not a problem.

If you are hunting water buff I would think either of the two calibres you mention would work - ie the .375 H&H and the .338 Lapua Magnum.

I do not own a .338 but they appear to be very similar in power and if you use well constructed 250 gr SPs and FMJs in the .338 I think with good shot placement they would kill buff very well. Plus Woodleigh also makes 300 gr pills for the .338 as well.

My personal reasons to choose a .375 over a .338 are:
1. The .375 is legal for cape buff and other big five in most African countries when the .338 is not.

2. The .375 is probably the most widely available big bore cartridge so finding ammo should not be as hard. Also reloading components are easy to get.

3. The .375 H&H Magnum is THE classic cartridge

4. I can use .375 projectiles designed for lever actions (eg the 220 gr Taipan, Hornady etc) for feral game and they are much cheaper

Having said that I have long been considering getting a .338 Win Mag, 8x68S or a .318 Westley Richards. One day but probably not for a long time, as I want the rifle to be in some sort of take down configuration for ease of travel and that adds a lot of $$$. So the .338 Lapua Magnum is similar but just burning a lot more powder. I like the idea of being able to use projectiles in the 160 to 180 gr range for medium game, but also load up to 250 gr and even 300 gr where it is required. Very versatile calibre range.

For my personal use I see a 8 mm to .338 as replacing my .30-06 instead of the .375. Read some chapters of WDM Bell last week and noted he recommended a .318 and a .450 as the ideal battery so you never know.

Also when I purchased my .375 I was actually looking for a .404 or a .416 but saw a nice .375 Whitworth instead at half the price.

That really helped. I'm kind of in a catch 22 situation right now. I bought a Blasr LRS2 in 338 Lapua Mag for long range, mostly for paper, but in NZ I can use it for open range shooting goats, deer and thar.

The gun is due next month and I have been waiting for about 6 months because of the special order. I love the look of the LRS2 but its not a hunting rifle.

OK, here's where the catch 22 comes in. My wife 'audited' me and yes, I have gone over board with my budget and its hard for me to justify another 'toy.'

I was craving for Blaser's Offroad-Timber where I can use 375H&H and have another barrel in 300WSM. But because of the hole in my pocket, I only have a nice 338 LapuaMag to play with.

I have no experience in hunting big game and was hoping to get an advice before going to Queensland for buffs. I dont wanna look out of place with the LRS2.

Questions:

1) Do you think I can use the LRS2 in Queensland for buff?
2) What the difference between 375H&H and 375H&H Magnum?

Q1 Sorry mate I don't have any knowledge of the Blaser LRS2. Don't know anything about target shooting. Personally I would use a hunting or field rifle, unless the target rifle is close enough to one.

Q2 No difference - just an abbreviation

Gentlemen,

Purely as an aside, the British army has recently adopted a .338 Lapua version of the Accuracy International L96 sniper rifle, for longer range platoon support. But as we're in NATO & also supposed to be "European" (my arse) its called 8.59mm. Also, just read that .338 Lapua is a necked down .416. That fact alone cheers me up whenever I see some!

A complete turn for the worst I am sure but! On the subject of the L96 AI Sniper rifle. The Australian ARMY have recently finished testing and have adopted the 50BMG version of it as an anti-material rifle for ranges excess of 1000m.

Some other useless information that you may or may not want to know. The .338 Lapua Magnum was adopted by the German Police GSG-9 as their main sniper rifle cartridge. The reason why, after the Munich Olympics Airport shootout extensive testing on sniper rifle ammunition was done, it was found that the 5.56mm and 7.62mm rounds were deflecting badly when shooting through the airliners glass at the terrorists. The .338 has the uncanny ability to punch a hole through aircraft glass with a very small amount of deflection. Interesting!
