Africa Hunting : Zimbabwe: Polish hunter sues after failing to bag elephant
on 2011/2/4 18:12:05

A Polish businessman is suing a travel agency after he failed to find elephants to shoot whilst hunting in Zimbabwe.

Waldemar I. (name withheld under Polish law) from Bytow in the Pomerania region in northern Poland, had long dreamt of hunting elephants in the African bush.

In a bid to fulfil his fantasy, he enlisted the help of hunting specialists Jaworski Jagreisen, a German-based firm that also organises trips in pursuit of Polish bison.

The company organised a trip for Waldemar I. to Zimbabwe, and the huntsman was picked up in Harare by staff from the Mopani Safaris company. However, the adventure was not to be a success.

“They took me to a terrain where there simply weren't any elephants,” he told the Rzeczpospolita daily.

“The bagging of trophies was simply out of the question.”

The head of Jaworski Jagreisen was in court in Poznan on Tuesday, where he argued that “the terrain is difficult and hilly, but elephants are present.”

“From what I know, Waldemar I. would have seen their dung,” he added.

The case has been adjourned until 15 February. The plaintiff is hoping to secure 32,000 zl (8,000 euros) from the company to cover his safari costs.

Surely all of the safari Co`s around the world are all kosher!

Not really as there is a litany of non events and complaints of various operators online.

There are always two sides to every story. This could end up like so many posts over on another forum.

The one thing you can guarantee about tomorrow's weather is that there will be weather.

I don't ever recall being guaranteed that I would get a critter unless it was penned up.

Some of the best hunts have been close to strike outs for game but I've had fun trying.

That's why it's called hunting and not shooting.

All the shit tells you is an Elephant was there. It doesn't tell you when they will return.

He wouldn't be the first guy to be run around the Rose Bushes while hunting.

I`m surprised that if they were going to rip off a client that they didnt tip a few wheelbarrows of shit about the place and then scrubbed out the tire tracks.
I know first hand of some of the dirty tricks that have been done even down here by certain mobs.
Some want the 'whatever' on the wall that they can be blind to what is exactly going on around them.

I applaud the fella in the news story.

I've hunted in areas for Ele where Spoor was minimal, that was until we got on to the resident herd.
Would be disappointing not to find any spoor and practically impossible, unless of course they aren't found there.

It doesn't say whether it was a cow or bull hunt? It does say trophies, but the price sounds like either a PAC or cow hunt. Nor how many days the hunt was for? Nor the area that was hunted? That alone would tell many a lot of whether there was elephant there or not.

Amazing that no elephant were sighted. Nor does it actually say or not whether any sign, spoor, dung etc was actually found.

I've tried and snif up on some Polish sites - and I may give you some bits and pieces...unofficial ofcourse.

Guy did his first hunt in 07 for Buff (not sure but my guess is with Lowveld Hunters) - all went well so he expressed a wish to get an Ele as well. It wasn't possible on that hunt, tho he was offered it for an 08...and he actualy booked that hunt through the Berlin agency to do the hunt with Lowveld Hunters and particular PH in particular area...

Here is the shity part - especialy No's 1,2,3:

In 08 he ended up stranded on HRE int. with no-show from Lowveld Hunters...instead after 2 hours a guy from Mopani turned up and took him hunting to/with:

1.entire different outfiter
2.entire different area with
3.entire different PH with
4.no Ele at the end...

93mouse,

Thanks for that info. Certainly starts to explain why the client wants to sue the agent for refund of the safari cost. Especially if the agent arranged 'replacement' outfitter/PH.

Getting into country and find allegedly almost everything switched?!

Might drop an email to the various outfitters and see if they wish to comment.

Have sent an email to Lowveld and Mopani Hunting Safaris to see if they want to make a comment.

BTW Mopani Hunting Safaris is Namibian? Would this be the same outfitter as operating in Zimbabwe?

Is there also a "Mopani Safaris" in South Africa? There is a registered address in Gauteng.

John Mopani is/was? Zim owned by Alex Kirkman - they operated in Doma Safari Area (NP) up till 2009. If they took that guy up to Doma there are Elephants there aplenty, tho one has to be rather fit to get anywhere there...

FWIW - guy did get his Ele later on another hunt offered on discounted hunt - Ele was taken as a crop raider on the night hunt tho...

Lots of smoke and mirrors there...
