African Trophys Back
      #158077 - 02/04/10 10:33 AM

Well 18 months after our family went hunting and on holiday in South Africa and Zimbabwe in 2008 our trophys have arrived. My trophys from June last year were also included.

My son Cameron fired the first shot and killed an older female Blesbok. The highlight of that trip was Cam taking a Rowland Ward Steinbok with his .243W after an hour long stalk in open grassveldt un-assisted.

We used Savuti Taxidermy and Kingela Forwarders. All communication was excellent. Kingela answered all e-mails within 24 hours of business hours. I will use both again.

Savuti blackened the horns on the trophys which is unfortunate as it is not the natural look. As I'm ignorant of Taxidermy matters it doesn't really matter. Kingela did a great job packing and the mounts were all bolted to the sides of the box and wrapped in bubble wrap. All the trophys were sent and were the same animals we shot. Tamex couriers delivered to my front door within 24 hours.

Opening the box

Cameron and his Steinbok. He is Uber excited.

Hanging in his room.

Female Blesbok, Eland, Springbok and Blue Wildebeast.

Zebra skin layed out for inspection.

tophet - that's great! I am so excited for you. By the way, my trophies arrive in San Francisco this Tuesday (April 5th). My brother will pick them up for me and then I'll go down and pick them up from him next month - mine only took 6 months! Again, congratulations! Christopher

Thx, (it's Anne isn't it ?). You picked up on the most important part of the hunt.

Cam was 14yo at the time. Old enough to not want to listen to his father but old ebough to listen to someone. That someone was our PH Andrew McLaren, who talked him through the stalk on a Steinbok we spotted the previous evening and then as we watched from afar, let Cam perform the stalk the next morning. Ever so slowly he covering about 200 metres in an hour to get a shot at this older male.

It may sound extreme, but his self confidence and self esteem took a major leap upward from that moment.

Finally getting his trophy back 18 months later cemented that experience with the tangible evidence of what he had done. The inches mean nothing, but the event does. (P.S. Written by a biased father).

The trophies will look good in your house. A nice selection.

Good steenbok too, congratulations to Cameron. Nice shoulder mount too.

Great news Tophet1, and great pics of the trophies and young fella, too!

Waiting for my heads from last September makes me feel a bit like a kid looking forward for Christmas - last I heard they were just about to leave Mozambique for RSA, the red tape having taken about five months. All I've got to do now is see my wife doesn't spend the money for the taxidermy balance and airfreight.

I don't suppose you could share with us what the shipping cost? Much has been said on another forum about costs and reliability with some forwarders.

Good news, it seems your son got bitten by african hinting. Its expereances like this that gets kids to stay out of trouble.

Paul,

Shipping Costs were US$856.22 for a 45kg box Dimensions 116cm x 63cm x 68cm. Air Malaysia freight JHB - KUL - SYD. I have yet to be invoiced for customs and any Australian costs but I will post those if/when they turn up.

I have organised a hunt for the Customs clearance agent who handled the transfer personally by walking the freight through Sydney airport for me.
