Are quick release scope mounts really necessary?

What are your thoughts on quick release scope mounts on a Dangerous Game Rifle? Are they really necessary? I have them on both of my D.G. Rifles, and have never needed them. Was it a waste of money?

I have it too on all my guns. If you have to track a Buffalo or Lion or any dangerous animal into some high grasses for example, you can't use a scope there and you need to remove it as fast as you can, to put it again when you are out the grasess.

When you need to use it, you REALLY need it.

I think this made a gun more versatile.

The q`s in my mind is the scope itself necessary considering that of all the dangerous game ever nailed a huge percentage was/is taken without one!

I have never been near dangerous game but i think its either a low power 1.5 x 6 Swarofski( or similar) or nothing on top for me.I cut my teeth on open sights and only use scopes now but would be happy either way.
Though i would love EAW qd`s on my mountain rifles

Most of the time you need a good scope for leopard, lion, and buffalo. The first shot should be a good one which is where the scope is invaluable.

Elephant... I don't belive in scopes. If you are not close enough not to need a scope, you are not close enough.

I reckon a QD scope system makes the rifle FAR more versatile and this applies to both dangerous and non dangerous rifles.

I wouldn't want EAW mounts on a mountain rifle.
Sure they are well made and look nice and return to zero and everything but they weigh heaps and they also position the scope way too high for a rifle that's been stocked for open sights.

With the newer Weaver type bases made of steel and the new sturdy steel QD rings...why not? They are so sturdy that they shouldn't fail if properly installed, and used as designed. I won't buy a rifle that has no open sights and am switching all my magazine rifles over to the Weaver based system with QD rings. The scopes can be mounted low enough with most systems. Even a 1 or 1.5 power scope can get in the way of a necessary snap shot in heavy bush.

A lot of people assume that a maximum of 5x is all that is required on a DG rifle. I am not sure that this is true. I agree that the lower the low end the better but a 7x or 8x or even a 9x can come in darn handy when you are trying to seperate a tan Lion from yellow grass or a brown Bear from thick alders.

Open sights are fine if the animal is in the open or at your feet

but there is nothing like a little bit of power in a GOOD glass to pick out the furry bits in heavy cover from farther away.

Just remember how much easier it is to spot any animal in thick brush with binos than with the naked eye.

I sure like them. I have them on several of my rifles including my"non-dangerous" ones as well. I like them for many reasons, some of which are:
You can take the scope off and use the iron sights when you need or want to.
You can have more than one scope for the rifle sighted in and ready to go.
You can remove the scope when your rifle is being handled by baggage handlers, placing the scopes in your carry on, where they receive TLC.
