Close Encounters with Buffalo--using a double??

Close Encounters with Buffalo
– by Craig Boddington

The classic way to shoot a Cape buffalo is up close with a double rifle, but that’s not always possible.

I was fortunate enough to have stumbled into booking my first buffalo hunt with Dawid.

He and his crew are absolutely tip top!!!!

I loved the experience hunting with him so much that I booked another hunt with him for this September!!!!!!!!

Just 14 more weeks to wait!! I’ve made all the arrangements now, so all that is left is to pass the time, play with the rifles at the range and wait to board the plane. I would without hesitation recommend Dawid Muller to anybody that would care to hunt buffalo. The Caprivi is a marvellous wild and unfenced habitat and lends itself well to a traditional African hunt.

Postman, I took my Buff in Zimbabwe several years ago and it was a lot of hard hot work. End of season days were 40+ degrees, most around the 43 and 45. In the end I had to settle for a 50mt shot, not up close and personal. You can certainly work to get your beasty. I hunted the Caprivi last year after non Trophy Elephant. Great place , just no Ele turned up so had to settle for a Black Wildebeest, Warthog and Baboon.

You will enjoy your time there. Photos of hunt when done please.

Bit of History/useless info on the Caprivi. The Governor of German West Africa (Namibia)-Cont Caprivi - envisaged being able to move from the west coast to the east on The Zambezi so traded the Island of Zanzibar for the Caprivi Strip. Bad choice if you ask me.

PS Daryl to save any angest I gave that bloke your name and address as the guy who owed him the money.

My first time was during the last week of June, first week of July. The temps were cold during the morning with a pleasant 28 degrees C mid afternoon. This time it will be the last two weeks of September so I expect it will be damned hot.

There are a tremendous number of buffalo in this particular concession, being situated between two national parks on the border with Botswana. It’s the south west corner of the Caprivi in the Wuparo conservancy.

Funny you didn’t see an elephant when you were there. We ran into a herd estimated of somewhere around 70 on the first day, and kept running into smaller groups the entire time. Their trumpeting was a loud feature in the middle of the night while trying to sleep. When we were tracking my injured buffalo, (yes I screwed up the first shot) we had an instance where an elephant was blocking our progress forward and one of the trackers had to make a tremendous ruckus to drive it away so we could continue through the papyrus swamp on the buffalo track. I must say, one does not appreciate the true huge size of the African elephant until one sees them in the wild with no zoo fences or moat between the observer and the elephant!!

I was a bit further away, up near Katimo Mulilo on the Zambezi. Just too many Angolan squatters in the area scaring most of the larger game away. The PH no longer has that concession so going back latter to try on a different concession at heavily discounted rate.

I really want to take my wife to Namibia one day.. think it would be a perfect trip for that.. I personally have never been there as well..hear lots of good things about it..

and YES, you don't really appreciate the size of the elephant till you are up close and personal.. we had numerous close encounters the last time I was in Zim.. but I do believe part of the reason was they were being poached/harassed by locals.. highly irritable.. bluff charged at one point to 8 yards.. close enough..

This bloke tried to collect but failed.

The dark patches on the shirt are sweat. End of a 45 degree day with a lot of bum scooting and some hard running.

Ripp I would think touring the Skeleton Coast and parts of the Kalahari would be great. My other half is not won over yet. Also going through the Caprivi to the western most corners, vivid sun sets I am told, than a couple of hours to Vic Falls.

Too hot for work. Running? Good on ya, Rule. My running days are over. If I need to go fast, I choose a quad or my F350.
My body? Scotty summed it up. "She'll never stand the strain, Captain, she's breaking up".

I shot more than 20 Buffalos in different country's of Africa , amongst other in the Caprivi strip , Zimbabwe and coastal Mozambique.

I have been saying this for years , but nobody believes me.

A double rifle is for all this reasons no longer the first choice these days for hunting Buffalos and also big game.

Daryl, that was 5 years ago and my running days are numbered.

Grandveneur you are correct. I shot my Buff within 5 minuets of shooting light. To dark to reliably use iron sights.

Shocked the hell out of my wife last week at the University Sport's centre.
I saw her walking back to the track exit after her "30 & over" fitness class, (I walk the track and push a few weights)
so I ran the last 20 feet to the exit door so she would see me running. She stopped dead in her tacks with her mouth open.
LOL - hurt my knees & my back doing that. Oh well, IT was fun while THAT lasted.(the fun part)
