Hey. I have not hunted in Africa yet, but has now been invited to a tour in 2015. I will hunt plains game and wondered if a double rifle in 9.3x74R with scope is the right medicine for such hunting, or should I rather buy me a bolt rifle in 300wm ?

Krieg Africa is vast so is the list of the plains game. It would help if you would tell us where in Africa you will be hunting and what species of plains game you have in mind.

In my opinion, probably the BEST or close too the best plains game rifle combination for most of Africa (and Australia also).

Last year I shot all the game you are talking about with a 9.3 single shot. Take your 9.3 and have a blast. Taking my 450NE for Cape Buff in 2015, cant wait

Seeing the praises to 9.3, I have the feeling that my 400-350 NE single-shot should be equally good for Africa.

Probably true.

I really like the 9.3x74R but contrary to some of the above comments, it is not a long range cartridge and has quite a curved trajectory. Not a good choice to longer ranged plains game shots. If people know their rifle, its trajectory and how it shoots, maybe to 225 metres. If not the usual 100 metres. My 9.3 shoots very accurate one hole groups with each barrel.

Truthfully a .300 will probably increase your chances of taking game, but simply killing a lot of animals doesn't necessarily equate to success.

I would think that the 9.3 is fine, as in it will surely kill, but perhaps the thing to do is to make sure the outfitter knows your shooting capabilities and personal hunting preferences.

If it was me I'd take the double and leave the scope at home.

Just my 2 cents - nothing more.

Best of luck and post pictures when you get back.

Your 9.3 will work fine. Limpopo is mainly bushveld. You can expect to shoot at ranges between as little as 30 m to 100 m. Yes you will get opportunities of up to 200m, but the average shooting distances in Limpopo is 50 -75m. I think you will do fine with the 9.3

Yep for bushveld is fine, but if hunting wide open plains may still work, but may have to forgo a lot of opportunities.

What I use is pretty similar in trajectory to your idea as I'm shooting 300gr round nose, mine is a .375 H&H Merkel 140AE double, here's a reachy shot with it just a few weeks ago on Gemsbok / Oryx. As long as you're well practiced and know your rifle, there is absolutely no reason why I wouldn't see a 9.3x74R double as perfect for what you're setting out to do. It'll add some class and enjoyment to your hunt too, no doubt. I've hunted the Limpopo as well and as others mentioned it is typically inside 200 yard shots.

I'm headed to Durbin with Crusader Safari in June for 10 days. All I'm brining is my Chapuis SxS in 9.3x74r. I'm going on a bushbuck quest with a side of warthog. First good one and then keep trying for a better one. Of course if I see a great kudu, eland or nyala ...

I picked up a set of shooting sticks with a padded rest for DRs from Safari Sporting creations, really helpful. Off the sticks I can keep 6 shots in the 5 inch bullseye at 200 meters. It has a Leupold vx6 1-6x24 illuminated on it. Norma 286gr Orynx as a load.

Leaving the 300h&h home might be a mistake, but it seems like I will not be alone in that decision. Also just packing a breakdown case is going to be cool.

Rell,

Sounds like you'll be hunting in the Umkomaas. My youngest son and I hunted there with Andrew a few years ago. Excellent nyala, bushbuck, and bush pig hunting! Very thick, so your 9,3x74R will be a good choice.

That is the spot. Thanks for posting, It makes me feel better about the 9.3x74r as the sole piece in the battery.

It's really a trip for just bushbuck but I've never hunted bush pig. I thought they where mostly hunted over bait or at night? Did you get one?

Yes, that's my understanding as to how the bush pigs are hunted in the Umkomaas. We did not hunt for them, but did see quit a bit of sign.
