Waterbuck Thread!

OK, guys, post your bull's eye bucks.

This is my one and only. He was taken in RSA in 2001 with my Argentine sporter .30-06. He's not the longest horned buck but he had very nice, massive bases. I shot him face on to me at about 75 yards. It did not appear that the animal realized we could see him standing in the black thorn stand he was hiding in.

Waterbuck seem to have a regal air to them. I've tried bow hunting them but have not been successful yet.

The Waterbuck is extremely underrated as a trophy animal, they are magnificent. This grand fellow concluded my fist day’s hunting in Africa, I will never have a greater day!

I was quite surprised how misleading their size is - if you look at them on the pictures they look kinda bit bigger than impala - tho in reality they are red stag size.

One of the first animals I ever shot in Africa--southern Zimbabwe..

Not my Waterbuck but I was there on this trip and took this photo.

Kate with her Waterbuck (and her PH, Pieter Diedericks). Northern part of the Limpopo Province in South Africa back in 2000. (About fifteen miles south of the Limpopo River and a little east of the town of Swartwater.)

Rifle: Ruger M77 Mk II in .338 Win Mag
Handload: 250 gr Nosler Partition at 2650 fps muzzle velocity (chrono average)

After taking an Impala and a Warthog on previous days, this was Kate's first large plains game animal she had ever taken. The Waterbuck has never been scored/measured but she's VERY proud of him!

This is not the biggest Waterbuck we have hunted and I must add that waterbuck is one of those animals that I still have to shoot myself as well and will hopefully soon.

But I just love the look on this one very unique with one horn more straight than the other.

This waterbuck was shot with a 416 hoffman and 400 gr swift a frame he couldnt get up after the shot altough he tried. Waterbuck are tough and with their long hair makes it more difficult to track them as it takes a long time before the blood hits the ground after soaking the hair.

I love waterbuck since first seeing them in Kenya in 1988 on an island in Lake Navaisha where one could wonder among the wildlife the only dangerous beasties being hippos on the shores.

Shot my first one in 2002 on the Shangaani River banks in the Gwayi Valley in Zimbabwe. First kill of the safari.

Interesting the PH took the waterbuck back to the homestead for a shampoo bath and rub down to remove the grease from its hair. Said waterbuck is fine meat but can be tainted by the oily residue on its hide if handled incorrectly.

This is my waterbuck, hunter past August 2009 in Kimberley South Africa, a long stalk in the bush, and finally shooted quite near (100 yards) in a very dirty area with a lot of bush.

Caliber 375 H&H 235 grains, shoot from the front, just in the chest, instant dead. It is 30 inches long, and quite thick bases, a nice trophy.

Got this Waterbuck in June 2010 in the Limpopo.
He measured 29.5 inches & apparently unusual in having
that forward sweeping curve on both horns. (So my PH said).
Rifle is a 375 Ruger.

Thanks for your comments. The waterbuck are quite good eating.
They do exude an oil through their coat which is supposed to be an insect repellant of sorts and if you let this come into contact with the meat it taints it making it inedible. So a bit of care needed when skinning the animal out. We ate of every animal we shot & shared out the meat with locals. All pretty tasty.

As messmate said, the meat is fine. The hide has a waxy oily coating which is quite water repellent and if it gets on the meat, the meat is spoiled.

The outfitter I used in 2002 shampooed and washed the waterbuck carcase in camp before skinning. He said that after this the meat would be fine.

Other outfitters might for example have their staff take care with skinning in the field if camp is not accessible to also keep the meat edible.

Same for stags in rut, or not touching the glands on stags and then touching the meat. Different reasons but same result.

I would love to contribute to this thread, however I can't for the life of me figure out how to post a picture, yes I've read the FAQ its about as clear as mud. Most sites just have an attachment box to click on where your making the post!

This is my Waterbuck shot in August 2011 in the Free State. He was only 64 3/8" S.C.I. but was hard won and had been hunted by the last 3 hunters without success.
