Zim cow elephant hunts - how much?
      #150955 - 17/01/10 06:34 PM

How much are Zim cow elephant hunts going for at the moment? Either tusked cow or tuskless hunts?

What's the additional cow "trophy" fee as well?

Any deals going on?

Thanks in advance.

check out www.cmsafaris.com/ Buzz and Miles probably have some of the best tuskless ele hunting in Zim. Price sheet shows a little over $10,000, plus the usual costs of getting there, for a 7 day hunt.

..."Attitude" Ripp, HA! Cows begin each day with PMS, and it's down hill from there. Bulls are far more tolerable.

SCI is the place to shop for prices this time of year.

That's why I strongly believe you are best off with the biggest calibre rifle you can handle when it comes to Cow Ele hunts, particularly during early season amongst the thick stuff.
With Bulls, I would like a light weight rifle and would be happy enough with a 9.3mm.

IIRC - Ian Nyschens used to refer to them as "bitches of the bush" and came to the conclusion that a .404 was not powerful enough for rooting them out of the thick Zambezi valley 'jess'...

Although the 404 was considered a tad light for this game. Loaded with the Woodleigh 450grn FMJs at 2200fps would add a bit to the original loads.

I recently saw an ad for a 10 or 12 day bull hunt in Zim for $17,500....thought all in all that was a pretty good deal..don't think one will find much for less than that on bulls...

Unless things have changed a lot --think cow and tuskless hunts will be relatively inexpensive this year...at least on can hope..

Check with Roger Whittall Safaris. I was going to do a tuskless hunt this year with Roger, but finances won't allow it. He quoted me a very good daily rate. I hunted with RWS before and had a great hunt. I think tuskless cow trophy fee is around $3500.00 if memory serves me. Don Crane at Safari Outfitters hooked me up. Maybe Magara is available to PH! Great guy!

Seems prices are steadily increasing surprisingly (and perhaps unreasonably?) fast. Only 5 years ago, a 7 day cow ele hunt with Buzz and Myles was about US$6000 including a tuskless cow!

IMHO, the world economy remains in its current state--prices will either decline or some operations will no longer be in business...those types of hunts are what us "common" folk go on...the really wealthy are not as apt to go on those--much more the big bulls etc..again IMHO... it is the average "common folk" who will cut these events more quickly again, that the wealthy...

Maybe I'm crazy..but that is my take..

Personally hope it all gets sorted out, we all go hunting more and have a great life... but????

Trophy fees and day rates have risen dramatically for non trophy game like tuskless. Things have gotten over priced if you ask me.

That's for sure. US$3500 as a trophy fee for a tuskless cow is just plain ridiculous. As is US$600 for "field preparation" of trophies. It's not as if a skinners wages, the salt used etc amount to even a quarter of that. Even including transport back to town.

Having just returned from Burkina Faso, I can mention that they charged about Euro 150,- per animal for the field preparation of a cape. And about half of that for a "Euro skull mount". I consider both to be highly overpriced considering what wages and supplies cost locally. So this trend seems to be spreading all over.

However, as Ripp mentioned, this greedy mentality might end up coming back to bite them on the ass with the current financial situation in the world.

It's what I saw on the CM website. Gov't regulated or not, it's still ridiculous!

John, about US$ 750/ day, 7 days, with US$ 2750/ cow or PAC elephant in Zim.
In Namibia, a non export/ non trophy/ "own use" bull will go for US$ 1000/ day, and US$ 5000 for the elephant bull.
