Former Rhodesian PM Ian Smith dies
Published: Nov. 20, 2007 at 3:15 PM

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Ian Smith, the former prime minister of Rhodesia, has died in South Africa following a long illness. He was 88.

Smith and his white minority government declared independence from Britain in 1965. He led the government until 1979, during which time the country was wracked by violence. A settlement in 1979 paved the way for the creation of Zimbabwe in 1980 and the election of Robert Mugabe as prime minister.

Smith was a member of the Zimbabwe Parliament until 1987 when he retired.

In 1988, Smith told the BBC he had good reasons for declaring independence.

"Had we not resorted to this the country would have degenerated into chaos and confusion," he said in that BBC interview, denying the declaration led to years of civil war.

"The civil war was caused by people who left our country and were brainwashed in Russia, in China," he said.

"They were power hungry people who wanted to take their country over immediately and were not prepared to wait for the evolutionary process."

Smith was born in the small mining and farming town of Selukwe, the youngest of three children. His father was a butcher-turned-cattle-rancher who emigrated from Scotland in 1898.

Smith served in the Royal Rhodesian Air Force during World War II, suffering burn injuries in a 1943 crash. He later was shot down over Italy where partisan forces gave him refuge.

He married Janet Watt in 1948. They had one child, a son.

The damm BBC, or should I call them the "New Labour BBC" reported this tonight and suggested the Smith was in part responsible for the state of Zim today, because he did not negotiate a transition to black rule. What a crock of shit. How do you debate democracy and fair treatment with a murdering, despotic, corrupt, Marxist dictator for life.

But there you are again, all the fault of white imperialism, even a quater of a century later.

I am sick to death of this white mans burden shit.

Rant over.

Bramble

Kepp ranting, I think most would agree with you.

"But there you are again, all the fault of white imperialism, even a quater of a century later."

It seems to be a bit like they expect our CURRENT Prime Minister to say "Sorry" for what previous Government's prior to 1970 did to Aborigines - where they took the children and put them in White Foster Homes years ago - now called the Stolen Generation.

What a shame he had to see the place he loved in such a bad way during his last years.
RIP, Mr Smith.

The sad thing is that most people (who don't know any better after being brainwashed by our western leftist media) still think it was a good thing that Rhodesia was "liberated" from the evil white man.

And they keep attempting to close their eyes to why Zim and other African countries have gone down the drain, by wrongfully blaming former colonial powers. Instead of putting the blame on the true cause: the current corrupt black Africa leaders. Who are still power hungry Marxists...

A tribal society that lived in a radically differnt paradigm (world view, mid set ect.) was colonised by industial powers for over 300 years. Have the various paradigms & infrastucture of the industial era been established at the grass roots in the last 25 years or even 100 years? Is it possible for the present government to do so?

No - you are all wrong. Its is clearly the fault of the colonial powers that a country that had arguably the best infrastructure in Africa 25 years ago, rich natural resources and strong agricultural production is now starving itself to death. The Chinese will be in there next, same as Sudan...
