A couple animals taken from northern Moz.
      #87967 - 29/10/07 10:27 PM

Just returned from a safari in the remote northern Mozambique Provence of Cabo Delgado were I hunted Buffalo and Eland with Zimbabwe PH Stuart Taylor in the Niassa reserve's Safari block B.
The Safari operator was the reputable Jumbo Moore/ Kambako Safaris.
We took the SA Saturday flight from JHB to Pemba and on Sunday from Pemba to Kambako air field with Kambako's Cessna 207.
Block B is over 350'000acrs and almost double with the adjacent Courtada.
It is a big area considering the small quota allowed by the reserve and I had it for my self for most of my stay.
This is a lovely area for a safari but don't come to shoot a heap of trophy's. It is a place for a Safari for selected game.
This area has some big Elephant with a minimum size allowed of 60lbs with a good possibility of 85lbs+ .
The area has good numbers of Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Eland a select Plains Game.
We saw no evidence of poaches.
At present Kambako has two main camps and one fly camp with plans for a second fly camp.
The Eland and Buffalo are often taken after very long tracking hunts.
We were often on spoor for up to seven hours and often had to give up as they kept on the move until mid day when the afternoon winds would betray our presence.
A hunt for the great Blue Bulls (old Eland) an excellent challenge with one being taken by tracking a well earned trophy.
Although my Eland was huge with great horns, the old Blue Bull eluded us.

I used my Husky 9.3Mauser with Woodleigh 320grn solids and Swift A frame 300grn softs with a muzzle velocity of only 2230fps with full penetration except for one solid which was found in the stomach in perfect condition.

Top stuff! Congratulations.

Marvellous looking country too, just makes you want to step down off that koppe and start hunting towards those mountains!

Marrakai,
We sent the trackers out for a bit of a scout around the area to look for fresh spoor. I had only just finished watching their progress via binoculars when I spotted a Lioness pass the area they had just walked.
We called them on the hand held radios and warned them to keep an eye out..

Sounds like a GREAT trip. Thanks very much for posting the pic's.

That is a super rifle, too. Do you have any closeup pictures of the action of your Husqvarna?

It looks like a model 146 {with bolt altered for scope and some safety work done}. By the way, was your rifle originally a 9.3x57?

Lovely pics. Congratulations! Your rifle looks great too. I once had a Haquavarna 9.3X57. I now have a Simson 9.3X62 with hexagon to round brl & full length rib. It is due back from restoration next week.

I'll post the pictures next week.

Yes the Husqvarna was originally in 9.3x57 and it came from New Zealand so it might have been your rifle Nakihunter.
PS, Would love to see some pictures of the Simson and who is your gun smith?.

Adam
My 9.3X57 went to the South Island. The stock on that rifle had a bigger drop for using open sights. Kicked like a mule with that thin comb. I put a scope on it added a straighter Wenig laminated stock which solved the problem Finally I built a 358 on a Mod 70 action & got rid of the Husky. Now the Simson is a beautifully made gun that handled like a shotgun. Unfortunately the stock was fire damaged (24 lpi checkering still good!) & some pits on the outside, though the bore was fine. The work is being done by Keith Frazier of Tauranga (he worked at H&H Londong for a few years in the 80's).

I'll request John to put up the photos once I get the rifle.

Cheers

Congratulations Adam. As Ann said, that Eland is actually "pretty", and I'll bet quite tasty too!

The terrain in northern Mozambique is very scenic, and I'm glad you got a chance to enjoy it. Do you have any more pictures you can share with us? And how did you get to camp? A direct charter from RSA or Zim? Or via Maputo? Did you get to see any more of the country?

Erik

Adam

Congratulations on the excellent Eland! And the buff too.

How long did you hunt for? Only the two animals? Other game seen?

The lioness story shows you never know what is slinking around you in the bush out of sight. Great little story though.

We once had a black rhino in the bush feeding near us, maybe less than 20 yards away probably in plain sight but too dark to see it. We made a quick exit. The funny thing is it walked in full sight past the Landcruiser where my wife was sitting on its way to us maybe a half hour earlier.
