My first safari with ZimAfrica in April 2006.

Need to know where he was taken and with who???

I booked this safari entirely myself. Made a few mistakes. Learned a lot. And had an overwhelming experience.

The young PH is {and now probably PH] is a freelance apprentice named Doug Gilbert. Great guy.
I went with ZimAfrica Safaris. Wayne Jardine was the PH, and the photographer of the lion and buff photos.

The safari took place in southern Zimbabwe in early 2006. A .338 Win. took everything but the buff. A .458 Win with 500 grain solids did the deed on the buff. A one shot kill on the buff. If I am privileged enough to hunt Cape buffalo again I would use the same load. It was devestating.

The lion was taken at 28 paces on April 4, 2006. The photo was taken at 4:00 pm {After Doug, Wayne, and myself had a tinkle. Nerves you know.}. I am looking directly into the sun. It didn't seem to bother me much.

Wayne van den Berg was attacked by a buffalo, and whilst it was goring the PH his Tracker, COWBOY NCUBE, attacked the buffalo in the face, trying to blind it with a knife. The buffalo then turned its attention to Cowboy, and chased him up a tree, thus diverting its attention from the PH, thus saving his life.

Could we get the rifles make and what bullet in the 338 worked on the lion?
Which 500 solid did you use in the 458?

The .338 is an older, custom barrelled Sako. I used 250 Speer Grand Slams with enough IMR 4350 to get me 2650. In the .458 I used 74 grains of H335 powder and a Hornady solid that was heavily crimped. An accurate 2150 fps. Nothing fancy, but it worked.

Great Lion, Would love to hear more about that hunt. How many days was the hunt ? How many lion did you see ? How many shots did you use...etc. etc... detail on such a great hunt would be appreciated... Good Work..

My first safari in 1994 was part of my honeymoon with my wife and Wayne Jardine was the PH. Heard he was no longer PHing but recently heard he was back at it again.

Definitely looks like a great safari with lots of success. The lion is spectacular and the cape buff has nice hard bosses. Not to mention the excellent kudu and other plains game.

I met Wayne Jardine at the 2006 Reno SCI show. The price as quoted was the same at the end of the hunt. Not priced into the hunt {free} was an unsuccessful PAC elephant hunt over several days, and the extra day it took to get my kudu. I had a tough time with the kudu with everything being green and lush in early April.

Would I hunt with him again? In a New York minute!

The hunt was to be a fourteen day afair. I kept several days on each side of the hunt for sight seeing, paper work,etc. The lion was taken on the 4th day of the hunt.

I chose early April as the lions had not been hunted for a winter. I think I guessed right. The other stuff was harder than hell due to the lush conditions.

I picked the early lion hunt in Zim for the same reason--I am the 2nd hunter in camp for the season with thoughts being baits will be hung for 18 days before I get there--I realize there is a risk of best lion being taken but so be it...

Your lion is absolutely awesome-- I can only hope to get one even close to that..
